Oriented aggregation is a special case of aggregation in which nanocrystals self-assemble and form new secondary single crystals. This process has been suggested to proceed via an intermediate state known as the mesocrystal, in which the nanocrystals have parallel crystallographic alignment but are spatially separated. We present the first direct observations of mesocrystals with size and shape similar to product oriented aggregates by employing cryo-TEM to directly image the particles in aqueous suspension. The cryo-TEM images reveal that mesocrystals not only form but also transform to the final single crystal product while in the dispersed state. Further, high-resolution cryo-TEM images demonstrate that the mesocrystals are composed of spatially separated and crystallographically aligned nanocrystals.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved remarkable success in various graph mining tasks by aggregating information from neighborhoods for representation learning. The success relies on the homophily assumption that nearby nodes exhibit similar behaviors, while it may be violated in many real-world graphs. Recently, heterophilous graph neural networks (HeterGNNs) have attracted increasing attention by modifying the neural message passing schema for heterophilous neighborhoods.

Vascular-like tissues composed of cells maintaining their shape and structure at any position in a culture dish without the use of gels or other artificial materials are ideal vascular models to test the effects of candidate drugs on cells without adsorption by artificial materials and analysis of structural changes over time. In this study, we aimed to prepare fiber-shaped cell aggregates composed of human umbilical vein endothelial and mesenchymal stem cells as vascular pericytes anchored to the bottom of culture dishes at a defined location using our developed cell self-aggregation technique and dumbbell-shaped culture groove. The fiber-shaped cell aggregates maintained their shape for at least two weeks without rupture, and histological analysis revealed that they formed a unique tissue structure with a gapless endothelial layer on the outer surface and capillary-like structures oriented in the same direction as the long axis of the fiber in the medial side.

This paper investigates the flow performance and mechanical properties of underground gelled filling materials made from potash mine tailings, using lime as a gel. It demonstrates the feasibility of using lime as a gel, potash mine tailings as aggregate, and replacing water with potash mine tailings to create filling materials that meet design requirements for flow and compressive strength. The role of lime in the hardening process is explored through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and infrared analysis.

Simultaneous rheological, polarized light imaging, and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments (Rheo-PLI-SAXS) are developed, thereby providing unprecedented level of insight into the multiscale orientation of hierarchical systems in simple shear. Notably, it is observed that mesoscale alignment in the flow direction does not develop simultaneously across nano-micro lengthscales in sheared suspensions of rod-like chiral-nematic (meso) phase forming cellulose nanocrystals. Rather, with increasing shear rate, orientation is observed first at mesoscale and then extends to the nanoscale, with influencing factors being the aggregation state of the hierarchy and concentration.

Despite numerous studies, uncertainties and controversies regarding causal relationships persist. We utilized Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, an advanced statistical tool, to further investigate causal links.
