Psychiatric patients admitted for the first time and aged 18-45 years were investigated concerning their need for contact with a social worker and their relatives' need for contact with the psychiatrist concerned. 54% had already had contact with a social worker but 21% had an unfulfilled need for contact with a social worker. Patients from social class V, in particular, required contact with social workers. 62% of the relatives had no contact with the psychiatrist concerned and 61% of these were dissatisfied with this. 43% of the relatives who had contact with the patient's were not satisfied with that contact. It is emphasized that consideration of the patients' needs for contact with a social worker and the needs of there relatives for more frequent and better contact with the psychiatrist concerned are necessary and desirable to a greater extent than is the case at present.
