Accurate prediction of runoff is of great significance for rational planning and management of regional water resources. However, runoff presents non-stationary characteristics that make it impossible for a single model to fully capture its intrinsic characteristics. Enhancing its precision poses a significant challenge within the area of water resources management research.

Surface enzyme-polymerization endows Janus hydrogel tough adhesion and regenerative repair in penetrating orocutaneous fistulas.

Nat Commun

December 2024

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Anesthesiology and Brain Functional Modulation, Clinical Research Center for Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Translational Research Institute of Brain and Brain-Like Intelligence, Shanghai Fourth People's Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

Penetrating orocutaneous or oropharyngeal fistulas (POFs), severe complications following unsuccessful oral or oropharyngeal reconstruction, remain complex clinical challenges due to lack of supportive tissue, contamination with saliva and chewed food, and dynamic oral environment. Here, we present a Janus hydrogel adhesive (JHA) with asymmetric functions on opposite sides fabricated via a facile surface enzyme-initiated polymerization (SEIP) approach, which self-entraps surface water and blood within an in-situ formed hydrogel layer (RL) to effectively bridge biological tissues with a supporting hydrogel (SL), achieving superior wet-adhesion and seamless wound plugging. The tough SL hydrogel interlocked with RL dissipates energy to withstand external mechanical stimuli from continuous oral motions like chewing and swallowing, thus reducing stress-induced damage.

This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the intrinsic properties of RNiP (where R = Sm, Eu) filled skutterudite, employing the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within density functional theory (DFT) simulations using the WIEN2k framework. Structural, phonon stability, mechanical, electronic, magnetic, transport, thermal, and optical properties are thoroughly explored to provide a holistic understanding of these materials. Initially, the structural stability of SmNiP and EuNiP is rigorously evaluated through ground-state energy calculations obtained from structural optimizations, revealing a preference for a stable ferromagnetic phase over competing antiferromagnetic and non-magnetic phases.

Photodynamic therapy of cancer-associated infections.

Photochem Photobiol

December 2024

Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Pathogens can be involved in tumor initiation, promotion, and progression through different mechanisms, and their treatment can prevent new cancer cases, improve outcomes, and revert poor-prognostic phenotypes. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) successfully treats different types of cancers and infections and, therefore, has a unique potential to address their combination. However, we believe this potential has been underutilized, and few researchers have investigated the impacts of PDT of both infection-related and cancer-related outcomes at once.

Multi-Functional Semiconductor Polymer Doped Wide Bandgap Layer for All-Perovskite Solar Cells with High Efficiency and Long Durability.

Small

December 2024

Beijing Key Laboratory for Magneto-Photoelectrical Composite and Interface Science, School of Mathematics and Physics, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing, 100083, P. R. China.

The study presents a multi-functional and semiconductor polymer poly[bis(3-hexylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione] (PBDTTPD) doping strategy that significantly enhanced the performance of the two-terminal all-perovskite tandem perovskite solar cells (T-PSCs). An optimized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 26.87% has been achieved.
