Eighteen carbapenem-resistant, OXA-48-positive enterobacterial isolates recovered from Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, France, and Belgium were analyzed. In most isolates, similar 70-kb plasmids carrying the carbapenemase gene bla(OXA-48) were identified. That gene was located within either transposon Tn1999 or transposon Tn1999.2, which was always inserted within the same gene. This work highlights the current plasmid-mediated dissemination of the OXA-48 carbapenemase worldwide.

The spread of OXA-48-encoding plasmids from Klebsiella pneumoniae (OXA-48-Kpn), especially successful high-risk (HR) clones, is a growing concern. Biofilm formation can contribute to the dissemination of OXA-48-Kpn. It is not known whether biocides can affect the transfer of OXA-48-Kpn in biofilm.

Carbapenem-resistant causes important health care-associated infections worldwide. An outbreak of sequence type 11 (ST11) OXA-48-producing (OXA-48-Kp) isolates occurred in Tzaneio Hospital in 2012 and was contained until 2014, when OXA-48-Kp reemerged. The spread of -encoding plasmids into carbapenem-resistant raises concerns about the emergence of untreatable bacteria. We report the acquisition of in a carbapenem-resistant strain after a 3-week course of colistin in a patient repatriated to France from Portugal.
