Multifunctional DNA-Collagen Biomaterials: Developmental Advances and Biomedical Applications.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

January 2025

J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611, United States.

The complexation of nucleic acids and collagen forms a platform biomaterial greater than the sum of its parts. This union of biomacromolecules merges the extracellular matrix functionality of collagen with the designable bioactivity of nucleic acids, enabling advances in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, gene delivery, and targeted therapy. This review traces the historical foundations and critical applications of DNA-collagen complexes and highlights their capabilities, demonstrating them as biocompatible, bioactive, and tunable platform materials.

Masquelet's induced membrane technique in the upper limb: a systematic review of the current outcomes.

J Orthop Traumatol

January 2025

Unità Operativa di Ortopedia e Traumatologia, APSS Trento, Largo Medaglie d'oro, 9, 38121, Trento, Italy.

Background: The Masquelet induced membrane technique is a surgical procedure that allows the reconstruction of segmental bone defects using a relatively simple approach that requires minimal resources from both the healthcare facility and the patient. Historically applied to the lower limb, this technique is gaining increasing attention in the literature for its use in the upper limb.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases to identify all studies reporting the outcomes of the Masquelet induced membrane technique in the long bones of the upper limb (humerus, radius, and ulna) with a sample size of at least 3 patients.

Introduction: Since its synthesis in 1962, ketamine has been widely used in diverse medical contexts, from anesthesia to treatment-resistant depression. However, interpretations of ketamine's subjective effects remain polarized. Biomedical frameworks typically construe the drug's experiential effects as dissociative or psychotomimetic, while psychedelic paradigms emphasize the potential therapeutic merits of these non-ordinary states.

[Thousands of years of human-dog relationship].

Biol Aujourdhui

January 2025

Univ. Rennes, CNRS, ECOBIO (Ecosystèmes, biodiversité, évolution) - UMR 6553, Campus de Beaulieu, Avenue du Général Leclerc, 35042 Rennes Cedex, France.

During recent years, much progress has been made in understanding the origin and evolution of the dog. Thanks to the collaboration between zooarchaeology, genomics and paleogenetics, researchers were able to hypothesize scenarios regarding the origins of the canine lineages present in Europe at the end of the Pleistocene and the beginning of the Holocene. Research has also shown a correlation between human and canine migration across time and space, highlighting a strong relationship between man and his best friend.

Germanium nanocrystal non-volatile memory devices: fabrication, charge storage mechanism and characterization.

Nanoscale

January 2025

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, 4 Engineering Drive 3, Singapore 117583.

The widespread proliferation and increasing use of portable electronic devices and wearables, and the recent developments in artificial intelligence and internet-of-things, have fuelled the need for high-density and low-voltage non-volatile memory devices. Nanocrystal memory, an emergent non-volatile memory (NVM) device that makes use of the Coulomb blockade effect, can potentially result in the scaling of the tunnel dielectric layer to a very small thickness. Since the nanocrystals are electrically isolated, potential charge leakage paths localized defects in the thin tunnel dielectric can be substantially reduced, unlike that in a continuous polysilicon floating gate structure.
