Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S29 (MRPS29) is a mitochondrial pro-apoptotic protein also known as death associated protein 3 (DAP3). Over-expression of MRPS29 has been reported to induce apoptosis in several different human cell lines while conferring resistance in glioma and Ataxia telangiectasia cells. These two contradictory reports led us to investigate the MRPS29-induced apoptosis further. Cyber searches of the EST databases revealed the presence of a splice variant of MRPS29 mRNA containing an upstream open reading frame (uORF) at the 5' untranslated region (UTR). In this study, we confirmed the presence of this uORF using real-time RT-PCR and investigated its role in MRPS29 expression.

The interplay between ribosomal protein (RP) composition and mitochondrial function is essential for energy homeostasis. Balanced RP production optimizes protein synthesis while minimizing energy costs, but its impact on mitochondrial functionality remains unclear. Here, we investigated haploinsufficiency for RP genes (rps-10, rpl-5, rpl-33, and rps-23) in Caenorhabditis elegans and corresponding reductions in human lymphoblast cells.

Paracoccidioides are dimorphic fungal pathogens and the etiological agents of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). This severe systemic mycosis is restricted to Latin America, where it has been historically endemic. Currently, PCM presents the fewest diagnostic tools available when compared to other endemic mycoses.

Multigene, genus-wide phylogenetic studies have uncovered the limited taxonomic resolution power of commonly used gene markers, particularly of rRNA genes, to discriminate closely related species of the nematode genus Heterorhabditis. In addition, conflicting tree topologies are often obtained using the different gene markers, which limits our understanding of the phylo- and co-phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of the entomopathogenic nematode genus Heterorhabditis. Here we carried out phylogenomic reconstructions using whole nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, and whole ribosomal operon sequences, as well as multiple phylogenetic reconstructions using various single nuclear and mitochondrial genes.

Rourke 2002 is an evergreen herbaceous flower with high ornamental value. In this study, we sequenced the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of and reported it for the first time. The cp genome was 158,914 base pairs (bp) in total length, including two inverted repeats (IRs, 27,052 bp), separated by a large single-copy region (LSC, 86,519 bp) and a small single-copy region (SSC, 18,291 bp).
