Published: February 2010

Currently, the use of oral and systemic forms of bisphosphonates is increasing dramatically in a large group of patients either in the form of anti-osteoporosis medications or as a part of a chemotherapeutic regimen for several malignant diseases. As adult orthodontic treatment has become more widely accepted in most orthodontic practices, orthodontists must be aware of the risks, benefits, and effects of bisphosphonates use on the patient's general health status, as well as on their orthodontic treatment outcomes. This review aims to discuss the use of bisphosphonates, the complications associated with their use, and their impact on orthodontic treatment.

Insights into NEK2 inhibitors as antitumor agents: From mechanisms to potential therapeutics.

Eur J Med Chem

Electronic address:

NEK2, a serine/threonine protein kinase, is integral to mitotic events such as centrosome duplication and separation, microtubule stabilization, spindle assembly checkpoint, and kinetochore attachment. However, NEK2 overexpression leads to centrosome amplification and chromosomal instability, which are significantly associated with various malignancies, including liver, breast, and non-small cell lung cancer. This overexpression could facilitate tumor development and confer resistance to therapy by promoting aberrant cell division and centrosome amplification.

Objective: This study aimed at investigating implant survival rate and marginal bone loss (MBL) around extra-short implants. The impact of the loading protocol and of the use of an intermediate abutment was also evaluated, to explore possible differences in terms of the outcome measures.

Materials And Methods: Patients with single or multiple mandibular or maxillary posterior edentulism rehabilitated using extra-short 5-6 mm long implants were included.

Hypoplasia of the upper jaw to one degree or another inevitably occurs in patients with cleft lip and palate. The most difficult task is to fix skeletal deformity of the upper jaw, especially the discrepancy between its transversal dimensions due to the high risks of recurrence after treatment. One of the key stages of rehabilitation of this group of patients is orthodontics and surgical treatment aimed at eliminating functional and aesthetic problems of the dental system.

Pulsed electromagnetic field prevents tooth relapse after orthodontic tooth movement in rat models.

Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, East Java, Indonesia.

Objective: Relapse after orthodontic treatment remains a crucial problem. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) accelerate osteoblastogenesis and inhibit osteoclastogenesis. However, their effect on tooth movement during the retention phase of orthodontic treatment has not been studied.

Impact of surface conditioner phytic acid (IP6) Er,Cr:YSGG laser (ECYL) methylene blue photodynamic therapy (MB-PDT) on the microleakage and shear bond strength (SBS) of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) to primary sound dentin. Overall, 80 extracted sound primary molars were collected followed by their submergence in self-cure acrylic resin. The dentin surface was exposed and made flat and was assigned into four groups based on the surface conditioning.
