A Mn oxide containing mine tailings, generated in the Kalahari Mn fields, has been shown to oxidatively breakdown acid azo dyes acid orange (AO) 7, acid red 88, acid red 151 and acid yellow 36 but not acid yellow 9. The total reducible Mn content of the tailings is 33%, of which 3% is hydroquinone extractable and thus easily reducible. The net oxidation state of the Mn within the tailings is 3+. Decolorization of AO 7 by the Mn tailings increases with decreasing pH. The decolorization mechanism is initiated on the hydroxyl group of AO 7 and proceeds via successive electron transfers from the dye molecule to the oxide surface resulting in the asymmetric cleavage of the azo bond. The reaction products have been identified as 1,2-naphthoquinone, 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate, and coupling products involving 1,2-naphthoquinone and benzenesulfonate radicals. The AO 7: Mn(III) reaction stoichiometry has been tentatively calculated to be 1:3. The reaction shows longevity with 95% decolorization still observed after 60 days of dye replenishment. Further breakdown of 1,2-naphthoquinone and 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate was not observed, thus these compounds are considered to be the terminal reaction products of the AO 7- Mn tailings reaction.

pH-responsive polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers are used as well-defined building blocks to design light-switchable nano-assemblies in solution. The complex interplay between the photoresponsive di-anionic azo dye Acid Yellow 38 (AY38) and the cationic PAMAM dendrimers of different generations is presented in this study. Electrostatic self-assembly involving secondary dipole-dipole interactions provides well-defined assemblies within a broad size range (10 nm-1 μm) with various shapes.

The design of efficient advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the presence of bicarbonate has long attracted considerable attention in the field of environmental catalysis. In this study, sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO) as one of the most abundant substances in actual water, was introduced to a NaClO/Ru(III) system to enhance the removal of acid orange 7(AO7). NaHCO could significantly improve the removal efficiency of the Ru(III)/NaClO process in HCO at a pH range of 6.

Azo dye was used to prepare a new series of complexes with chlorides of rhodium (Rh), ruthenium (Ru), and corona (Au). The prepared materials were subjected to infrared, ultraviolet-visible, and mass spectrometry, as well as thermogravimetric analysis, differential calorimetry, and elemental analysis. Conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, metal content, and chlorine content of the complexes were also measured.

A novel series of azo dyes was successfully synthesized by combining amino benzoic acid and amino phenol on the same molecular framework azo linkage. The structural elucidation of these dyes was carried out using various spectroscopic techniques, including UV-vis, FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and HRMS. Surprisingly, the aromatic proton in some dyes exhibited exchangeability in DO, prompting a 2D NMR analysis to confirm this phenomenon.

This study demonstrated a novel approach to accurately estimate 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in textile wastewater using a microbial consortium from food processing wastewater fixed on coconut fibers. Although glucose-glutamic acid (GGA) has been widely known as the most preferred substrates for microbial respiration, its calibration surprisingly resulted in an overestimation of BOD in textile wastewater due to its lower utilization rate compared to that of textile wastewater. After being adapted with a new nutrient environment composed of GGA and textile wastewater, the adapted packed-bed bioreactors (PBBRs) was capable of accurate estimation of BOD in textile wastewater using GGA standard solution.
