The work presents a short review of concepts of origin and representation of ancient (primary) endogenous rhythms whose period is in the near-second-near-minute range. These rhythms are the basis for the appearance of the viscero- and somatomotor excitation in various functional systems of vertebrate and invertebrate animals. Based on literature data and the own studies, there has been considered a hypothesis of universality of mechanisms of generation of endogenous rhythms of a certain frequency diapason regardless of their localization. The recently performed new experimental works have confirmed and enlarged A. V. Voino-Yasenetskii's viewpoints suggested in the 1950-1980. It has been shown that under effect of certain extreme or pathological factors, in excitable structures, functional dissolution of coordination mechanisms can be observed; it is accompanied by a change of the activity pattern and reproduction in it of the ancient excitation rhythms absent in the normal state. The appearing atypical rhythmicity is similar with pathological activity described in clinical medicine. Development of further studies of mechanisms of reproduction of primary rhythms can be not only of fundamental, but also certain practical interest.

The synchronization of parasites as they replicate within red blood cells of their vertebrate host remains largely unexplored. Understanding this synchronization could reveal how parasites optimize their lifecycle to maximize transmission, evade the immune response and maximize energy acquisition. Rhythmic replication fulfils some criteria of an endogenous oscillator with time of day cues potentially provided by temperature, oxygen levels, hormones and/or nutrient availability.

Collagen-I fibrillogenesis is crucial to health and development, where dysregulation is a hallmark of fibroproliferative diseases. Here, we show that collagen-I fibril assembly required a functional endocytic system that recycles collagen-I to assemble new fibrils. Endogenous collagen production was not required for fibrillogenesis if exogenous collagen was available, but the circadian-regulated vacuolar protein sorting (VPS) 33b and collagen-binding integrin α11 subunit were crucial to fibrillogenesis.

Cortisol is released upon activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, varies across the day, possesses an underlying diurnal rhythm and is responsive to stressors. The endogenous circadian peak of cortisol occurs in the morning, and increases in cortisol observed post-awakening have been named the cortisol awakening response (CAR) based on the belief that the act of waking up stimulates cortisol secretion. However, objective evidence that awakening induces cortisol secretion is limited.
