Epidemiology and anatomic distribution of colorectal cancer in South Africa.

S Afr J Surg

December 2024

Centre for Global Surgery, Department of Global Health, Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fifth most common cancer in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and the third most common in South Africa (SA). CRC characteristics in SSA are not well described. The aim is to describe patient characteristics and anatomic location of colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC-AC) in SA.

Background: Heart failure should be diagnosed as early as possible. Although deep learning models can predict one or more echocardiographic findings from electrocardiograms (ECGs), such analyses are not comprehensive.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a deep learning model for comprehensive prediction of echocardiographic findings from ECGs.

Introduction: Hepatitis B and C are viral infections causing chronic liver inflammation and, when left untreated, lead to cirrhosis and a risk for hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of primary liver cancer with high mortality. The hepatitis B virus-hepatitis C virus (HBV-HCV) coinfection leads to a faster progression to advanced liver diseases and higher hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk than monoinfection. Unlike the relative risk for HCC due to either HBV or HCV, no recent analysis of the risk for HBV-HCV coinfection exists.

Predictors of Mortality in Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Regardless of Early Left Ventricular Unloading: A National Experience.

J Cardiothorac Vasc Anesth

January 2025

Department of Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Surgery/Cardiac ICU Section, Heart Hospital, Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar; Department of Critical Care Medicine, Beni Suef University, Egypt; Weill Cornell Medical College, Doha, Qatar.

Objective: The use of an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) has been suggested to unload the left ventricle while on venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) for cardiogenic shock (CS), leading to possibly improved in-hospital mortality. However, the predictors of mortality on dual mechanical circulatory support have not yet been evaluated, especially in real-world clinical settings. Therefore, a case-control study was conducted to determine the rate of all-cause mortality associated with VA-ECMO use regardless of left ventricular (LV) unloading, and with early LV unloading in the setting of CS, and to identify the predictors of mortality associated with VA-ECMO, with concurrent early LV unloading.

Objective: As radiocephalic fistula is not necessarily appropriate for all patients with advanced kidney disease, our aim was to investigate the sensitive indicators that affect the functional primary patency of radiocephalic fistulas.

Methods: This prospective observational study included consecutive patients referred to the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University for initial creation of radiocephalic fistula from July 2017 to December 2019. Preoperative ultrasound parameters, demographic characteristics, serum indicators and comorbidities were recorded.
