The crystallization and melting behaviors of linear polylactic acid (PLA) treated by compressed CO(2) was investigated. The isothermal crystallization test indicated that while PLA exhibited very low crystallization kinetics under atmospheric pressure, CO(2) exposure significantly increased PLA's crystallization rate; a high crystallinity of 16.5% was achieved after CO(2) treatment for only 1 min at 100 degrees C and 6.89 MPa. One melting peak could be found in the DSC curve, and this exhibited a slight dependency on treatment times, temperatures, and pressures. PLA samples tended to foam during the gas release process, and a foaming window as a function of time and temperature was established. Based on the foaming window, crystallinity, and cell morphology, it was found that foaming clearly reduced the needed time for PLA's crystallization equilibrium.

Palm and palm kernel oils are preferred ingredients in industrial food processing for baked goods and chocolate-based desserts due to their unique properties, such as their distinctive melting behaviors. However, ongoing concerns about the social and environmental sustainability of palm oil production, coupled with consumer demands for palm oil-free products, have prompted the industry to seek alternatives which avoid the use of other tropical or hydrogenated fats. This project investigated replacing palm oils with chemically unhardened Swiss sunflower or rapeseed oils.

A novel organic-inorganic eutectic phase change material (PCM) based on sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was developed to meet the needs of heat recovery and building heating. Three kinds of PEG with different molecular weights were selected to form organic-inorganic eutectic PCM with SAT. The thermal properties of three series of SAT-PEG eutectic PCM were compared based on DSC results, focusing on the impact of PEG addition on the phase change temperature and enthalpy of SAT, as well as the melting uniformity.

Theoretical and Experimental Research on the Short-Range Structure in Gallium Melts Based on the Wulff Cluster Model.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Key Laboratory for Liquid-Solid Structural Evolution and Processing of Materials, Ministry of Education, Shandong University, Jinan 250061, China.

In this paper, the short-range ordering structures of Ga melts has been investigated using the Wulff cluster model (WCM). The structures with a Wulff shape outside and crystal symmetry inside have been derived as the equivalent system to describe the short-range-order (SRO) distribution of the Ga melts. It is observed that the simulated HTXRD patterns of the Ga WCM are in excellent agreement with the experimental data at various temperatures (523 K, 623 K, and 723 K).

Structural Changes in Semi-Crystalline Ethylene-Based Ionomers During the Heating Process.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Graduate School of Organic Materials Science, Yamagata University, 4-3-16 Jonan, Yonezawa 992-8510, Japan.

The structural behavior of ionic aggregates in semi-crystalline ethylene-based ionomers during heating was studied to understand the influence of different ionic groups on their properties. The ionomers were synthesized by neutralizing carboxylic acid groups with Zn and Na ions at varying ratios. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed two distinct endothermic peaks, with the melting point being largely unaffected by the Zn/Na ion ratio.

During the preparation of single-domain (S-D) REBaCuO (RE-123) superconducting bulks, the seed crystals can serve as templates for crystal growth, guiding the newly formed crystals to grow in a specific direction, thereby ensuring the consistency of the crystal orientation within the sample. However, the infiltration temperature is typically restricted to approximately 1050 °C when employing NdBaCuO (Nd-123) crystal seeds in the traditional top-seeded infiltration growth (TSIG) technique for producing single-domain Y-123 bulk superconductors. In the present study, to overcome the temperature limitations of the heat treatment process, the optimized YO +011 IG (011 refers to BaCuO powder) method was employed to fabricate a group of single-domain Y-123 bulks with a high-temperature infiltration (1000-1300 °C).
