Natural History and Long Term Follow-Up of Incidental Thyroid Nodules on Computed Tomography Imaging.

Br J Radiol

January 2025

Consultant Head and Neck Radiologist, Department of Radiology, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Objectives: incidental thyroid nodules (ITNs) are found in up to 25% of CT scans. Increased use of cross-sectional imaging has contributed to the increased incidence of thyroid cancer worldwide. ITNs pose a management dilemma since nodule malignancy rate is 5-15% but most cancers are indolent and prognosis in differentiated thyroid cancer is excellent.

Lead Adsorption and Desorption at the Barite (001) Surface in the Presence of EDTA.

ACS ES T Water

January 2025

School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Queens College, City University of New York, Queens, New York 11367, United States.

Scaling minerals, such as barite, can cause detrimental consequences for oil/gas pipelines and water systems, but their formation can be inhibited by organic chelators such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Here, we resolve how EDTA affects sorption and desorption of Pb at the barite (001) surface using a combination of X-ray scattering and microscopy measurements. In the presence of EDTA, Pb incorporated in the topmost part of the barite surface and adsorbed as inner-sphere complexes on the surface.

Protection by natural cholera against later episodes of cholera over 10 years of follow-up in Matlab, Bangladesh: a retrospective cohort study.

Lancet Microbe

January 2025

International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, Dhaka, Bangladesh; International Vaccine Institute, Seoul, South Korea; UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, Los Angeles, CA, USA; Vaccine Innovation Center, Korea University School of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Patients with cholera have been shown to be protected against subsequent cholera for 3 years after their initial episode. We aimed to assess protection at 10 years of follow-up.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, cohorts of patients treated for cholera (index patients) and contemporaneously selected age-matched individuals without cholera (controls), randomly selected from the population of Matlab, Bangladesh, were assembled between 1990 and 2009 and followed for up to 10 years.

Hotspots and status of Fetal Alpha-Thalassemia from 2009 to 2023: a bibliometric analysis.

Front Pediatr

December 2024

Maternity and Child Health Care of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Nanning, China.

Objective: to evaluate the research status and development hotspots of fetal α-thalassemia by quantitatively analyzing the diagnostic status, key areas, related management measures and prospects of the disease by bibliometrics.

Methods: The global literature on fetal α-thalassemia and severe α-thalassemia from 2009-2023 in the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) was visually analyzed by VOSviewer and CiteSpace.

Results: (1) The examination of the quantity of publications concerning fetal α-thalassemia indicates a rising tendency prior to 2018, followed by a decrease after 2018.

A retrospective approach for evaluating ecological niche modeling transferability over time: the case of Mexican endemic rodents.

PeerJ

December 2024

Departamento de Zoología, Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City, Mexico.

Ecological niche modeling (ENM) is a valuable tool for inferring suitable environmental conditions and estimating species' geographic distributions. ENM is widely used to assess the potential effects of climate change on species distributions; however, the choice of modeling algorithm introduces substantial uncertainty, especially since future projections cannot be properly validated. In this study, we evaluated the performance of seven popular modeling algorithms-Bioclim, generalized additive models (GAM), generalized linear models (GLM), boosted regression trees (BRT), Maxent, random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM)-in transferring ENM across time, using Mexican endemic rodents as a model system.
