Cells were isolated from post-radiation fibrosis biopsies of patients with recurrent breast carcinoma. These cells were identified as fibroblasts and compared with fibroblasts from normal breast tissues for their proliferative activities, chromosome number and for the presence of various components of the extracellular matrix and cytoskeleton. The proliferative activity of the fibrosis-derived fibroblasts did not significantly differ from that of normal breast fibroblasts. Both cell types required serum to grow and did not form colonies in soft agar. Cells from 2 of the 3 fibroses analyzed displayed aneuploid karyotypes with multiple structural abnormalities. All of the fibroblastic cells produced types I, III and V collagen, fibronectin and vimentin. However, in contrast to normal breast fibroblasts, fibrosis-derived cells produced high amounts of oncofetal fibronectin. In addition, fibrosis of fibroblasts also expressed the alpha-actin isoform which is specific for smooth-muscle cells. These results suggest that post-radiation fibrosis in malignant breast contains atypical fibroblasts with fetal and myofibroblastic characteristics.

Radiotherapy is a critical treatment for cancer but poses significant risks to ovarian tissue, particularly in young females, leading to premature ovarian failure (POF). This study examines the therapeutic potential of etoricoxib nanostructured lipid carriers (ETO-NLC) in mitigating radiation-induced ovarian damage in female rats. Twenty-four female rats were randomly assigned to four groups: a control group receiving normal saline, a group exposed to a single dose of whole-body gamma radiation (6 Gy), a group treated with etoricoxib (10 mg/kg) post-radiation, and a group treated with ETO-NLC for 14 days following radiation.

Background: Locoregional external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) is selectively used in thyroid cancer patients to induce locoregional control. However, despite technological advances, EBRT remains associated with toxicities. We evaluated thyroid-cancer specific toxicities and long-term Quality of Life (QoL) post-EBRT.

Background: Quantifying head and neck lymphedema and fibrosis (HN-LEF) is crucial in the investigation and management of treatment sequelae in head and neck cancer (HNC).
Methods: The T1- and T2-weighted MRI signal intensity (SI) was examined in relation to HN-LEF categories per physical/tactile examination (No-LEF, A-B = edema, C = edema + fibrosis, D = fibrosis), and MRI structural volumes were examined in relation to a novel 10-point HN-LEF score in the intraoral and submental regions.
Results: We identified differences in ranks among HN-LEF categories in relation to the MRI SI (A-B and C are higher than D and No-LEF for T2 SI, and A-B is the highest for T1).

Purpose: Bronchiolitis obliterans with pneumonic organization, or organizing pneumonia (OP), is an inflammatory disorder of the lungs, which can be triggered following pulmonary attacks of infectious or non-infectious origin. The non-infectious origins of OP include various entities including connective tissue diseases, exposure to toxic substances, medications, autoimmune diseases, and thoracic radiotherapy. The objective of this article is to summarize the literature on post-radiotherapy organized pneumonia, its etiologies, its clinical and radiological characteristics, as well as its treatment.
