Incontinentia pigmenti is a rare genodermatosis typically involving three stages: vesiculae, verrucous lesions, and hyperpigmentation. We clinically and pathologically documented a case from shortly after birth until the age of 17 years. Although the first two stages took a regular course, the third stage of the disease was characterized by hypopigmented streaks on the legs in addition to axillary hyperpigmentation. Similar hypopigmented areas were found in the patient's mother. Because pathological investigations of hypopigmented areas have been extremely rare, we performed light and electron microscopic studies and compared these with our findings in hyperpigmented regions. Light microscopy showed the hypopigmented streaks with slight epidermal atrophy and a reduced number of melanocytes and skin appendages. However, the main finding was round eosinophilic bodies in the upper dermis. Electron microscopic examination of these bodies demonstrated amorphous material that resembled colloid, suggesting degeneration of basal keratinocytes. Confirming previous reports, in hyperpigmented areas we found a reduction of pigment in those parts of the basal layer overlying melanophages located in the upper dermis.

When combined with certain metal species, films of amorphous Ge or Si can have their typical crystallization temperatures decreased, by a factor of three or four, down to ~ 200 °C. The phenomenon is called metal-induced crystallization (MIC) and, since its first observation in the late 1960's, shows a great technological potential in producing (poly-)crystalline films of Ge or Si onto low-melting point substrates under reduced energy conditions. From the scientific point of view, the microscopic mechanisms behind the MIC phenomenon (still) represents a scientific challenge, where most of the proposed models are invariably influenced by the samples details giving the impression that they only apply to very specific metal-semiconductor combinations and/or circumstances.

Polylactic acid (PLA) composites with high straw content face several challenges, primarily due to the inherent brittleness of straw and its poor compatibility with the polymer matrix. In this study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the microscopic structure of wheat straw chemically modified by NaOH and the silane coupling agent, and it was concluded that both treatments effectively removed waxes and silica from the surface of the straw, enhanced fiber roughness, and improved interfacial adhesion. Notably, the silane coupling agent treatment not only facilitated the formation of chemical bonds between the straw fibers and the PLA matrix but also filled the interfiber pores, significantly increasing the structural density.

Clarifying the pore-throat size and pore size distribution of tight sandstone reservoirs, quantitatively characterizing the heterogeneity of pore-throat structures, is crucial for evaluating reservoir effectiveness and predicting productivity. Through a series of rock physics experiments including gas measurement of porosity and permeability, casting thin sections, scanning electron microscopy, and high-pressure mercury injection, the quality of reservoir properties and microscopic pore-throat structure characteristics were systematically studied. Combined with fractal geometry theory, the effects of different pore throat types, geometric shapes and scale sizes on the fractal characteristics and heterogeneity of sandstone pore throat structure are clarified.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the osseointegration properties of titanium bone implants coated with carob-mediated calcium hydroxide nanoparticles biomechanically, radiographically, and histologically on rabbit tibias.
Material And Methods: Forty coated and forty uncoated titanium alloy bone implants were inserted into 20 New Zealand rabbits; each tibia received 2 implants. The rabbits were sacrificed after 4 or 8 weeks, and samples were retrieved for biomechanical evaluation through removal torque test to assess the bond between implant and bone, radiographic evaluation through microcomputed tomography analysis to compare the bone-to-implant contact percentage and bone volume of the peri-implant area, scanning electron microscopic and histologic evaluation through hematoxylin and eosin stain.
