We conducted a prospective study in 87 household contacts of 51 children with hemolytic uremic syndrome to determine the frequency of infection with Shiga-like toxin-producing bacteria. Gastrointestinal tract symptoms occurred in only 1 of 87 contacts. Free fecal toxin was detected in 25 of 64 (39%) of the household members. Neutralization with specific antisera to Shiga-like toxins I and II (SLT-I, SLT-II) revealed that in 6 of these household contacts only SLT-I was present in stool, in 10 only SLT-II was present and in 9 both toxins were found. Thirty-three percent of the hemolytic uremic syndrome families in which 2 or more members were studied had more than 1 household member with free fecal toxin in stool. None of the household contacts was found to have E. coli O157:H7 in feces. Serum samples were available in 77 household contacts; 75% (58 of 77) had serum neutralizing titers of greater than or equal to 1:4 to 1 or both toxins. In those contacts for whom paired sera were available, seroconversion was found in 10 of 24 (42%). These data show that household contacts of children with hemolytic uremic syndrome are commonly colonized with Shiga-like toxin-producing E. coli and seroconversion to Shiga-like toxins occurs frequently in family members of children with hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Aim: To explore the impact of intergenerational relationships on the social resilience of elderly populations in Arab societies. Additionally, the study aimed to identify the factors that influence the quality of these relationships and their role in enhancing or diminishing the resilience of older adults.
Design: A qualitative study.

Objectives: The long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health issues of the general population in Japan is unclear. Thus, we examined the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on fear of COVID-19 and psychological distress and determined their causal relationships among the general population in Japan.
Design And Setting: A longitudinal online survey was conducted by a Japanese online survey company to investigate the items regarding personal demographics, fear of COVID-19 (Japanese version of the fear of COVID-19 scale) and psychological distress (Japanese version of the Kessler 6 scale).
Unlabelled: The intestinal diarrheal pathogen colonizes the host terminal ileum, a microaerophilic, glucose-poor, nitrate-rich environment. In this environment, respires nitrate and increases transport and utilization of alternative carbon sources via the cAMP receptor protein (CRP), a transcription factor that is active during glucose scarcity. Here we show that nitrate respiration in aerated cultures is under control of CRP and, therefore, glucose availability.

Background: While certain studies have demonstrated that antiviral treatment administered to index patients with influenza can mitigate the transmission within households, the efficacy of anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents in curtailing household transmission remains to be conclusively established.
Methods: A retrospective study conducted from April 2021 to May 2022 across multiple centers in Thailand compared 892 individuals treated with favipiravir to 84 who received standard treatment among mild to moderate COVID-19 index patients. The study focused on the impact of favipiravir treatment in reducing household SARS-CoV-2 transmission by examining the secondary attack rate.

Unlabelled: Fibroblasts are considered a key player in the wound healing process. Although this cellular family is constituted by several distinct subtypes, dermal fibroblasts are crucial thanks to their ability to secrete pro-regenerative growth factors, extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and their immune and anti-inflammatory role. Sophorolipids (SL), sophorosides (SS) and glucolipids (G), mono-unsaturated (C18:1) or saturated (C18:0), glycolipids derived from microbial fermentation of wild type or engineered yeast , constitute a novel sustainable class of bio-based chemicals with interesting physicochemical characteristics, which allow them to form soft diverse structures from hydrogels to vesicles, micelles or complex coacervates with potential interest in skin regeneration applications.
