Directional electron and hole transport is essential in photosynthesis. Applied to molecular optoelectronics such as organic solar cells, these lessons from nature call for oriented supramolecular n/p-heterojunctions (SHJs) that contain various chromophores and antiparallel redox gradients (OMARGs). In this tutorial review, we summarize recent progress made toward the construction of OMARG-SHJs. This conceptually innovative twist added to a timely topic should appeal to the synthetic organic, supramolecular, biological, physical, analytical and materials chemist as well as to the expert in energy and environmental sciences.

Glutathione (GSH) and its oxidized dimer (GSSG) play an important role in living systems as an antioxidant, balancing the presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The central thiol (-S-S-) bond in GSSG can undergo free rotation, providing multiple conformations with respect to the S-S bridge. The six titratable sites of GSSG, which are influenced by pH variations, affect these conformations in solution, whereas in solids, additionally crystal packing effects come into play.

Highly diastereoselective self-assembly reactions give both enantiomers (Λ and Δ) of anti-parallel triple-stranded bimetallic Co(ii) and Co(iii) cationic helices, without the need for resolution; the first such reaction for Co. The complexes are water soluble and stable, even in the case of Co(ii). Studies in a range of cancer and healthy cell lines indicate high activity and selectivity, and substantial differences between enantiomers.

Article Synopsis
  • Encapsulins are protein compartments in bacteria that help manage metabolism and protect against oxidative stress by storing iron.
  • The structure of the protein EncD, part of the encapsulin system, was identified as an α-helical dimer and is unique among flavin-binding proteins due to its lack of a β-sheet.
  • EncD acts as a ferric reductase, playing a crucial role in the encapsulin's iron management system, which could have implications for developing treatments for diseases related to oxidative stress.

Redox-Regulated and Guest-Driven Transformations of Aromatic Oligoamide Foldamers in Advanced Structures.

Hubei Key Laboratory of Bioinorganic Chemistry & Materia Medica, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Luoyu Road No. 1037, 430074, Wuhan, China.

In this study, we demonstrate that an aromatic oligoamide sequence assembles into a trimeric helix-turn-helix architecture with a disulfide linkage, and upon cleavage of this linkage, it reconstructs into an antiparallel double helix. The antiparallel double helix is accessible to encapsulate a diacid guest within its cavity, forming a 2:1 host-guest complex. In contrast, hydrogen-bonding interactions between the trimeric-assembled structure and guests induce a conformational shift in the trimeric helix, resulting in a cross-shaped double-helix complex at a 2:2 host-guest ratio.

Microbial reductive dechlorination of organohalogenated pollutants is often limited by the scarcity of electron donors, that can be overcome with microbial electrochemical technologies (METs). In this study, polarized electrodes buried in marine sediment microcosms were investigated to stimulate PCB reductive dechlorination under potentiostatic (-0.7 V vs Ag/AgCl) and galvanostatic conditions (0.
