Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) has previously been validated for measuring wear volume in polyethylene acetabular liners. The creation of 3-dimensional (3D) articular and backside surface deviation maps using micro-CT is described. An acetabular liner was retrieved after 16.7 years of implantation and scanned with micro-CT along with a new, never-implanted liner of the same size and type. The liner surface geometries were reconstructed and co-aligned. A 3D comparison and cross-sectional analysis was performed. Maximum 3D deviation of the articular surface was -2.48 +/- 0.02 mm, with maximum backside deviation of 0.46 +/- 0.02 mm. Micro-CT can measure surface deviation and therefore calculate the volume of wear plus creep of retrieved acetabular liners, and may be applicable for wear simulator studies and analyzing other polyethylene components including tibial inserts.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is widely recognized as a powerful analytical technique, offering molecular identification by amplifying characteristic vibrational signals, even at the single-molecule level. While SERS has been successfully applied for a wide range of targets including pesticides, dyes, bacteria, and pharmaceuticals, it has struggled with the detection of molecules with inherently low Raman scattering cross-sections. Urea, a key nitrogen-containing biomolecule and the diamide of carbonic acid, is a prime example of such a challenging target.

Direct electrochemical detection of miRNA biomarkers in tumor tissue interstitial fluid (TIF) holds great promise for adjuvant therapy for tumors in the perioperative period, yet is limited by background interference and weak signal. Herein, a wash-free and separation-free miRNA biosensor based on photoexcited electro-driven reactive oxygen channeling analysis (LEOCA) is developed to solve the high-fidelity detection in physiological samples. In the presence of miRNA, nanoacceptors (ultrasmall-size polydopamine, uPDA) are responsively assembled on the surface of nanodonors (zirconium metal-organic framework, ZrMOF) to form core-satellite aggregates.

Diabetes mellitus, characterized by persistent hyperglycemia, remains a critical global health challenge. Inhibition of human pancreatic alpha-amylase, a key enzyme catalyzing carbohydrate digestion, is a promising approach to manage postprandial glucose levels. Cinnamomum zeylanicum, a medicinal plant known for its therapeutic potential, harbors bioactive compounds that can act as natural alpha-amylase inhibitors, though their mechanisms remain underexplored.

Dissimilar laser welding of martensitic AISI 1060 carbon steel and Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 was performed based on an experimental and numerical study. The experiments were then conducted based on central composite design experiments (CCD) and analyzed via the response surface methodology (RSM) by considering the effect of laser welding process parameters (incident laser power, speed of welding, nozzle distance and deviation of laser beam) on the weld joint characterization. The experimental results showed that the laser power had a remarkable effect on the melt pool depth.

Thiols, including Cysteine (CYS) and Glutathione (GSH), play pivotal roles in numerous physiological processes as they are integral components of many essential biomolecules and are found abundantly in foods such as additives and antioxidants. Any deviations in thiol concentrations can disrupt normal physiological functions, affecting the body's metabolism and potentially leading to diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, etc. Consequently, the imperative need for developing reliable and robust techniques for thiol analysis is crucial for early disease detection and ensuring food safety.
