Objective: To investigate the effects of high glucose on expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).
Methods: HUVECs were cultured in DMEM media containing high glucose with or without polyphenols for 24 hours respectively. The activity of MMP-2 in the supernatant was detected by zymography. The expression of MMP-2 mRNA and protein in HUVECs were detected by RT-PCR and Western blot respectively. The expression of EMMPRIN mRNA and protein in the cells were determined by RT-PCR as well as immunocytochemistry and Western blot respectively.
Results: The expression of MMP-2 and EMMPRIN mRNA were suppressed by a high concentration of glucose. Both the MMP-2 activity and protein level of EMMPRIN expression were also significantly decreased. Polyphenols abolished all the above changes of HUVECs induced by a high glucose level (P < 0.05).
Conclusions: An acute high glucose stimulation down-regulates the activity of MMP-2, the expressions of MMP-2 and EMMPRIN at RNA and protein levels in the endothelial cells, which may play an important roles in diabetic vascular complications in the early phase. Polyphenols treatment can diminish the detrimental effects of high glucose on HUVECs.

Importance: While guidelines recommend bedtime snacks for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), there is insufficient evidence championed those recommendation.
Objective: To evaluate if bedtime snacking is effective in preventing high fasting blood glucose incidence among women with GDM.
Design: An open-label, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial was conducted from December 2023 to July 2024 at Ma'anshan Maternal and Child Health Care Center, Anhui, China.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a significant brain disease with a high mortality and disability rate. Additional therapies for AIS are urgently needed, and neuroplasticity mechanisms by agents are expected to be neuroprotective for AIS. As a major active component of Salvia miltiorrhiza, salvianolic acid A (SAA) has shown potential for preventing cardiovascular diseases.

Aim: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic syndrome characterised by absolute or relative insufficiency of insulin secretion. The alkaloids from Rhizoma coptidis have potential hypoglycemic effects. Epiberberine (EPI), a protoberberine alkaloid extracted from Rhizome coptidis, has been found to regulate lipid metabolism.

Deuterium (H) and phosphorus (P) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) are complementary methods for evaluating tissue metabolism noninvasively in vivo. Combined H and P MRS would therefore be of interest for various applications, from cancer to diabetes. Loop coils are commonly used in X-nuclei studies in the human body for both transmit and receive.
