More than 500 inbred rat strains have been developed during the past 100 years for a wide range of biomedical applications. In addition to these traditionally bred strains, many induced mutants and several thousand mutagenized sperm samples have recently been generated. At present this huge number of strains is mainly managed by two rat resource centers, the National Bio Resource Project for the Rat in Japan (NBRP-Rat) and the US based Rat Resource and Research Center (RRRC). These resource centers not only collect, maintain and distribute rat strains as animals or cryopreserved embryos and spermatozoa, but also perform additional tasks such as phenotypic and genetic characterization as well as microbiological cleaning. Furthermore, they support researchers through informative databases in the selection of rat strains for specific research purposes. These global rat resource centers are essential for successful and sustainable research using the rat as a model species.

Global healthcare systems are under tremendous strain due to the increasing prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders. Growing data suggested that overconsumption of high-fat/high-carbohydrates diet (HFHCD) is associated with enhanced incidence of metabolic alterations, neurodegeneration, and cognitive dysfunction. Functional foods have gained prominence in curbing metabolic and neurological deficits.

Canids act as a crucial intermediary in the transmission of rabies and , serving as co-infection hosts and pathogen carriers for both rabies and hydatid disease (HD) transmitted from animals to humans. Therefore, an effective and efficient bivalent oral vaccine for preventing HD and rabies is urgently required to reduce economic losses in husbandry resulting from rabies and HD. In this study, a full-length plasmid (pcDNA4-NPM+G+EgM123+eGFP+L) carrying the gene and fluorescence reporter genes of eGFP and four auxiliary transfection plasmids of rabies virus SRV (pcDNA4-N, pcDNA4-P, pcDNA4-G, pcDNA-L) were established by reverse genetics approaches and co-transfected to BSR cells by electrotransfection.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the primary causes of mortality and disability, with arterial blood pressure being an important factor in the clinical management of TBI. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), widely used as a model of essential hypertension and vascular dementia, demonstrate dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which may contribute to glucocorticoid-mediated hippocampal damage. The aim of this study was to assess acute post-TBI seizures, delayed mortality, and hippocampal pathology in SHRs and normotensive Sprague Dawley rats (SDRs).

We investigated the sex-dependent effects of inflammatory responses in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT), as well as hematological status, in relation to cardiovascular disorders associated with prediabetes. Using male and female hereditary hypertriglyceridemic (HHTg) rats-a nonobese prediabetic model featuring dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and insulin resistance-we found that HHTg females exhibited more pronounced hypertriglyceridemia than males, while HHTg males had higher non-fasting glucose levels. Additionally, HHTg females had higher platelet counts, larger platelet volumes, and lower antithrombin inhibitory activity.

In recent years, the role of neurotrophins and their receptors in peripheral tissues has been of great interest. At a metabolic level, the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor trkB have been reported to participate in insulin secretion from the pancreas in response to increases in circulating blood glucose. To determines the role of the BDNF-trkB pathway in insulin secretion and pancreatic morphology in rats fed a cafeteria-style diet for 16 weeks.
