Anion photoelectron spectroscopy of C3N- and C5N-.

Anion photoelectron spectroscopy of C(3)N(-) and C(5)N(-) is performed using slow electron velocity-map imaging (SEVI) and field-free time-of-flight (TOF), respectively. The SEVI spectrum exhibits well-resolved vibrational transitions from the linear C(3)N(-) ground state to the corresponding C(3)N ground state. The TOF spectrum comprises transitions arising from the linear C(5)N(-) ground state to the corresponding neutral ground and excited states. This study yields the adiabatic electron affinities of C(3)N and C(5)N to be 4.305 +/- 0.001 and 4.45 +/- 0.03 eV, respectively, and a term value of 560 +/- 120 cm(-1) for the A(2)Pi state of C(5)N. Vibrational frequencies for the degenerate cis and trans bending modes of C(3)N(-) are also extracted.

The ground-state charge generation (GSCG) in photoactive layers determines whether the photogenerated carriers occupy the deep trap energy levels, which, in turn, affects the device performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, charge-quadrupole electrostatic interactions are modulated to achieve GSCG through a molecular strategy of introducing different numbers of F atom substitutions on the BTA3 side chain. The results show that 8F substitution (BTA3-8F) and 16F substitution (BTA3-16F) lead to different patterns of highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level changes.

What Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy Can Tell Us about Energy Transfer in Dendrimers: Ab Initio Simulations.

Two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectra of the phenylene ethynylene dendrimer with 2-ring and 3-ring branches were evaluated by combining the on-the-fly trajectory surface hopping nonadiabatic dynamics and the doorway-window simulation protocol. The ground state bleach (GSB), stimulated emission (SE), and excited-state absorption (ESA) contributions to the 2D signal were obtained and carefully analyzed. The results demonstrate that the ultrafast intramolecular nonadiabatic excited-state energy transfer (EET) from the 2-ring to the 3-ring units is comprehensively characterized by the SE and ESA signals.

Chromophores incorporated into rigid polymer matrices may exhibit novel photophysical properties distinct from those in liquid solutions. In this work, we explored the decay path of the second ππ* state (2ππ*) of riboflavin in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions and films with various acidities. Highly efficient internal conversion from 2ππ* to the lowest ππ* state (1ππ*) induced by slight in-plane motion is demonstrated in all PVA solutions and films, irrespective of environmental acidity and rigidification.
