Viral particles in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. | LitMetric

Viral particles in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Laryngoscope

Published: November 1977

Lymphoepithelioma of the nasopharynx was identified in a 17-year-old Chinese male. The Epstein-Barr virus titer was 1:3200. Tissue from the tumor mass was prepared for electron microscopy. Particles consistent with the morphological characteristics of herpes virus were found within the cytoplasm of malignant epithelial cells. This finding is discussed in relation to other data suggesting an oncogenic role of herpes virus in human malignancy.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is sensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with current treatment recommendations largely based on TNM-stage. Radiotherapy remains the backbone of treatment for NPC. Over the past decades, the addition of concurrent chemotherapy to radiotherapy for early-stage disease, and the combination of induction chemotherapy (IC) or adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) with chemoradiotherapy vs chemoradiotherapy alone for advanced disease have led to substantial improvements in survival of patients with NPC.

Background: Sepsis remains a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, yet early diagnosis is hindered by the limited specificity and sensitivity of current biomarkers.

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify lncRNAs that play a key role in sepsis and provide potential biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis.

Methods: Transcriptomic data from sepsis patients were retrieved from the Chinese National Genebank (CNGBdb).

Normal heart function depends on complex regulation by the brain, and abnormalities in the brain‒heart axis affect various diseases, such as myocardial infarction and anxiety disorders. However, systematic tracking of the brain regions associated with the input and output of the heart is lacking. In this study, we injected retrograde transsynaptic pseudorabies virus (PRV) and anterograde transsynaptic herpes simplex virus (HSV) into the left ventricular wall of mice to identify the whole-brain regions associated with the input to and output from the heart.

Neonatal Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections are rare but potentially fatal diseases. HSV infection is usually acquired when a newborn comes into contact with viable virus during intrapartum transit through infected birth canal. However, some cases are transmitted postnatally.
