Metastasis to eyelid as initial presentation of non-small cell carcinoma.

Published: February 2010

A 50-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of progressive eyelid swelling and intermittent hemorrhagic epiphora. A 1.2 x 1.3 x 0.7-cm friable hemorrhagic nodule was excised from the posterior eyelid surface. Histopathology revealed a poorly differentiated carcinoma. The patient underwent a systemic workup including CT of the lungs and was subsequently diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell carcinoma presumably of the lung. He received palliative radiation and chemotherapy and died 5 months after initial presentation. This report illustrates a case where metastatic eyelid disease was the presenting sign of hitherto undiagnosed lung cancer. It is followed by a review of clinical aspects of metastatic eyelid disease.

Hormone replacement therapy for steatotic liver management after surgical menopause.

Clin J Gastroenterol

January 2025

Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Shinshu University School of Medicine, 3-1-1 Asahi, Matsumoto, Nagano, 390-8621, Japan.

Although steatotic liver onset after natural menopause has been reported, evidence on the clinical course and treatment options for steatotic liver after surgical menopause is scarce. A 34-year-old woman with a history of severe obesity presented to our department with liver dysfunction following total hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy. Her serum estradiol level was notably low at 22 pg/mL, and a liver biopsy revealed significant fatty degeneration, lobular inflammation, hepatocyte ballooning, and stage F1 fibrosis.

Purpose: Acanthamoeba species are eucaryotic protozoa found predominantly in soil and water. They cause ulceration and vision loss in the cornea (Acanthamoeba keratitis) and central nervous system (CNS) infection involving the lungs (granulomatous amoebic encephalitis). Antiparasitic drugs currently used in the treatment of infections caused by Acanthamoeba species are not effective at the desired level in some anatomical regions such as the eye and CNS.

Robot-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT) may reduce surgical complications compared to open kidney transplantation (OKT), but no randomised trials have explored this to date. The aim of the present study is to explore the feasibility of introducing RAKT at our institution, making it available in deceased donor transplantation and evaluate early surgical outcomes prior to performing a randomised trial comparing RAKT to OKT. RAKT was performed at Department of Urology, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet, Denmark.

Advancing Parkinson's diagnosis: seed amplification assay for α-synuclein detection in minimally invasive samples.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia, beginning with early loss of dopaminergic neurons in the ventrolateral substantia nigra and advancing to broader neurodegeneration in the midbrain. The clinical heterogeneity of PD and the lack of specific diagnostic tests present significant challenges, highlighting the need for reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis. Alpha-synuclein (α-Syn), a protein aggregating into Lewy bodies and neurites in PD patients, has emerged as a key biomarker due to its central role in PD pathophysiology and potential to reflect pathological processes.
