MR guidance of high intensity focused ultrasound is evolving with each new application. In this paper we describe ongoing research in the MR-guidance aspect of MR-guided focused ultrasound. The structure is divided into the pretreatment/setup phase of the procedure, MR thermometry for monitoring the actual treatment, and methods for assessment and follow-up.

Rationale And Objectives: Extrathyroidal extension (ETE) and BRAF mutation in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) increase mortality and recurrence risk. Preoperative identification presents considerable challenges. Although radiomics has emerged as a potential tool for identifying ETE and BRAF mutation, systematic evidence supporting its effectiveness remains insufficient.

This research work focuses on developing an advanced diagnostic method for thyroid nodules using ultrasonography images. The core idea revolves around the observation that the presence and amount of calcium flecks in thyroid nodules can indicate their severity, potentially leading to severe thyroid cancer. A novel technique, named Bilateral Mean Clustering Strategy (Bi-MCS), is proposed, combining the strengths of Fuzzy C mean and K-mean clustering approaches.

The use of ultrasound (US) in the perioperative clinical management should be goal-directed, rapid, and reproducible. Thoracic US enables detailed examinations of vital structures, such as the airway, lung, pleural space, diaphragm, and heart. This chapter focuses on the value of US as a bedside tool to assess anatomy, guide procedures, and monitor vital organ function in patients undergoing thoracic surgery.

Context: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has diverse applications across various clinical specialties, serving as an adjunct to clinical findings and as a tool for increasing the quality of patient care. Owing to its multifunctionality, a growing number of medical schools are increasingly incorporating POCUS training into their curriculum, some offering hands-on training during the first 2 years of didactics and others utilizing a longitudinal exposure model integrated into all 4 years of medical school education. Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (MWU-AZCOM) adopted a 4-year longitudinal approach to include POCUS education in 2017.
