From fertilisation to delivery, calcium must be transported into and within the foetoplacental unit for intracellular signalling. This requires very rapid, precisely located Ca transfers. In addition, from around the eighth week of gestation, increasing amounts of calcium must be routed directly from maternal blood to the foetus for bone mineralisation through a flow-through system, which does not impact the intracellular Ca concentration.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a hypertensive pregnancy syndrome associated with target organ damage and increased cardiovascular risks, necessitating antihypertensive therapy. However, approximately 40% of patients are nonresponsive to treatment, which results in worse clinical outcomes. This study aimed to compare circulating proteomic profiles and identify differentially expressed proteins among 10 responsive (R-PE), 10 nonresponsive (NR-PE) patients, and 10 healthy pregnant controls (HP).

Successful pregnancy relies on a coordinated interplay between endocrine, immune, and metabolic processes to sustain fetal growth and development. The orchestration of these processes involves multiple signaling pathways driving cell proliferation, differentiation, angiogenesis, and immune regulation necessary for a healthy pregnancy. Among the molecules supporting placental development and maternal tolerance, the families of pregnancy-specific glycoproteins and galectins are of great interest in reproductive biology.
