Editor in chief - European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sugar triggers the brain's dopamine system, leading to a preference for high-calorie foods and potentially contributing to "food addiction," which moves us away from healthier options over time.
  • - Historically advantageous for survival, our craving for calorie-dense foods has now led to rising obesity and diabetes rates, posing significant public health concerns globally.
  • - Recent studies indicate a notable increase in sugar consumption among youth, particularly through sugary drinks, correlating with a dramatic rise in obesity rates from 1990 to 2022.

Objectives: Bilateral stimulation is a core element of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, a psychotherapeutic intervention for the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Promising previous findings showed measurable physiological effects of bilateral stimulation in healthy individuals, but studies that replicated these findings in PTSD patients are sparse.

Methods: 23 patients with PTSD and 30 healthy controls were confronted with affective standard scripts (pleasant, neutral, unpleasant) while bilateral tactile stimulation was applied.

Significance Statement: There is no standardized desensitization regimen for kidney transplant candidates. CD38, expressed by plasma cells, could be targeted for desensitization to deplete plasma cells producing alloantibodies and donor-specific antibodies. Few studies and case reports are available regarding the use of CD38 antibodies for desensitization in patients awaiting kidney transplant.

Several novel therapeutic approaches have been studied during the recent past and are summarized in this review.
