[Cardiac manifestations of Fabry's disease].

Department of Cardiology, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Affiliated to the Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Published: June 2009

Objective: Fabry' s disease is a rare X-linked recessive disease. Its cardiac manifestations are not well recognized.

Methods: The data of 3 patients from different Chinese kindreds with Fabry's disease and cardiac manifestations who seeked medical advice in our department in 2007 were analyzed. The age, sex, family history, main symptoms, ECG and echocardiographic findings were recorded for all the patients. The diagnostic criteria of Fabry's disease was based on alpha-galactosidase (alpha-GAL) quantity in white blood cells.

Results: All of the patients were female. Their age was from 41 to 57. Two of them had the typical symptoms of Fabry's disease in their young age. All of them had family history of the disease and cardiac symptoms. ECG showed ST-T change and echocardiography showed hypertrophy of left ventricule of different degrees. Their alpha-galactosidase level in white blood cells was lower than normal. The alpha-galactosidase level in patient 1 was the lowest. Her cardiac symptoms were most serious in the three patients and she had involvement of other organs.

Conclusion: Patients with Fabry's disease may have cardiac manifestations. Family history, typical symptoms in young age and the characteristics of multisystemic disorder are helpful clues to the diagnosis.

Importance: Cardiovascular health outcomes associated with noncigarette tobacco products (cigar, pipe, and smokeless tobacco) remain unclear, yet such data are required for evidence-based regulation.

Objective: To investigate the association of noncigarette tobacco products with cardiovascular health outcomes.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study was conducted within the Cross Cohort Collaboration Tobacco Working Group by harmonizing tobacco-related data and conducting a pooled analysis from 15 US-based prospective cohorts with data on the use of at least 1 noncigarette tobacco product ranging between 1948 and 2015.

The assessment of exhaled nitric oxide in patients with obesity and asthma before and after exercise.

J Asthma

January 2025

Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, Department of Pediatrics, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Objective: It is well known that children who suffer from obesity and asthma may also have exercise-induced bronchospasm. Exhaled nitric oxide is an indicator of airway inflammation, and could be affected by exercise. This study looked at how exercise, which is a typical cause of acute airway obstruction, affects the levels of FeNO and in obese and asthmatic children.

Role of Trained Immunity in Heath and Disease.

Curr Cardiol Rep

January 2025

Center for Cardiovascular Research, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine, 660 S Euclid Ave, Campus Box 8086, St. Louis, MO, 63110, USA.

Purpose Of Review: This review aims to explore the role of immune memory and trained immunity, focusing on how innate immune cells like monocytes, macrophages, and natural killer cells undergo long-term epigenetic and metabolic rewiring. Specifically, it examines the mechanisms by which trained immunity, often triggered by infection or vaccination, could impact cardiac processes and contribute to both protective and pathological responses within the cardiovascular system.

Recent Findings: Recent research demonstrates that vaccination and infection not only activate immune responses in circulating monocytes and tissue macrophages but also affect immune progenitor cells within the bone marrow environment, conferring lasting protection against heterologous infections.

Background And Objective: There is no satisfactory treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) because of poor tolerance of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. Supplemental oxygen therapy has been shown to reduce hypoxemia and is well tolerated in patients with ILD. However, little is known about the effect of nocturnal oxygen supplementation (NOS) on OSA in patients with ILD.
