A new synthesis of hyperbranched polymers is outlined. This paper presents the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers by the recently highlighted thiol-yne reaction. In the thiol-yne reaction, a catalytic amount of photoinitiator and UV radiation are used to add two thiols across one alkyne bond at room temperature. This work demonstrates how the thiol-yne reaction can be used to form hyperbranched polymers from both small organic molecules and polymeric chains bearing an alkyne and a thiol. The UV-catalyzed reaction is fast, forming high-molecular-weight polymers after 20 min of UV irradiation. Hyperbranched polymers made by the thiol-yne reaction have the potential to serve as new materials for a variety of applications from catalytic support and drug delivery to viscosity modification.

In this study, segmented hyperbranched copolymers with degradable and chain extendable cross-linker branch points were synthesized via green light-activated photoiniferter copolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) and a trithiocarbonate-derived dimethacrylate. A series of segmented hyperbranched copolymers with different degrees of branching were synthesized by changing the feed ratio of PEGMA to cross-linker to chain transfer agent. The segmented hyperbranched copolymers could be degraded into linear polymer chains by removing the trithocarbonate groups, which provides fundamental insights into the growth of primary chains during photoiniferter copolymerization.

The wood industry's dependence on traditional petrochemical adhesives, which pose environmental and health risks, has spurred research into sustainable alternatives. The rapid growth of graphite market is highly coupled with the increasing demand for Li-ion grade graphite, the production of which results in significant losses of the graphitic material in the form of graphite fines. Herein, for the first time, we report an effective strategy to utilize industrial waste graphite fines through the development of graphene oxide-based nanohybrids as non-toxic and efficient antibacterial agents. A root-like waterborne hyperbranched polymer, synthesized from diethylenetriamine (DETA) and methyl acrylate (MA) monomers, was inspired by the effect of solidifying soil with tree roots. This polymer was then blended with aqueous isocyanate SK615, known as MD-HBP-NH, to serve as a surface modifier for blockboards. The blockboards were treated with a modifier to enhance the interfacial adhesion with melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin-impregnated decorative paper, thereby preventing surface cracks.
