Proteoglycans play a crucial role in bone tissue formation promoting consolidation of collagen fibers and bonds between them and mineral crystals. The composition of extracellular matrix proteoglycans was analyzed in early aging OXYS rats with signs of early osteoporosis versus Wistar rats at the age of 2, 4, 6, and 8 months. It was found that bone mineral density in two month OXYS rats was lower than in age-matched Wistar rats. It increased only till 6 month of age in OXYS rats, and during the whole observation period in Wistar rats. Formation of peak bone mass in Wistar rats was accompanied by change in composition of proteoglycan pools in bone tissue matrix: accumulation of macromolecular keratan sulfate-containing proteoglycans, and decrease of uronic acid and sulfated glycosaminoglycan content. OXYS rats were noted for accumulation of micro- and macromolecular proteoglycans: uronic acids and sulfated glycosaminoglycans. Chondroitin sulfate AC and dermatan sulfate were accumulated in OXYS rat bone tissue with the increase in mineral density difference. Keratin sulfate was completely absent here, in contrast to Wistar rats.

Severe vitamin D (vitD) deficiency is a very common condition in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and it is predictor of poor prognosis. There is emerging evidence suggesting a connection between the insufficient response to phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5i) and vitD deficiency in patients with PAH. In the present translational study, vitD deficiency was induced in Wistar rats by exposure to vitD free diet for 5 weeks and followed by Su5416 administration and hypoxia (10%) for 3 weeks, a standard experimental model of PAH.

Antipsychotic medications are used to treat a psychological condition called 'Schizophrenia'. However, its long-term administration causes irregular involuntary motor movements, targeting the orofacial regions. Glycyrrhizic acid (GA) is a naturally occurring triterpene saponin glycoside obtained from the roots of the Glycyrrhiza glabra (liquorice) plant and well known for its antioxidant, antiapoptotic and neuroprotective abilities.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most frequent cause of dementia. Since there are complex pathophysiological mechanisms behind AD, and there is no effective treatment strategy, it is necessary to introduce novel multi-targeting agents with fewer side effects and higher efficacy. Polydatin (PD) is a naturally occurring resveratrol glucoside employing multiple mechanisms toward neuroprotection.

Background: Closely related to the subfamily of proapoptotic proteins is the antiapoptotic protein bcl-2, which acts as an intracellular blocker of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. By inhibiting the action of effector caspases, as well as blocking the release of AIF and cytochrome C, Bcl-2 prevents regulated cell death and ensures survival in conditions of damage.
Method: The study was performed on Wistar rats, which were subjected to gravitational overloads (9g) in the caudocranial vector for 5 minutes twice a day for 28 days.
Background: A purine nucleoside called cladribine has been shown to increase toxic amyloid protein and cause impaired cognition. Auranofin is a gold(I)-containing drug with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, anti-amyloidogenic, and neuroprotective properties. The goal of the current study was to find out the neuroprotective effects of auranofin against cladribine-induced Aβ accumulation associated with AD-like symptoms in experimental rats.
