Disruptive behavior in healthcare has been identified as a threat to quality of care, nurse retention, and a culture of safety. A qualitative study elicited registered nurse experiences with disruptive clinician behavior in an acute care hospital. A conceptual framework was developed to provide a structure for organizing and describing this complex construct that includes 4 primary concepts: disruptive behaviors and its triggers, responses, and impacts.

Living with acuteness in chronic illness: The temporal underpinnings of endometriosis.

Med Anthropol Q

December 2024

Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland.

This article explores how acuteness is experienced by people with endometriosis in Finland. Drawing on in-depth interviews as well as anonymous written endometriosis stories, we trace instances when the sense of chronicity and cyclicality of endometriosis is disrupted by a possibility of risk to life. These instances include when endometriosis tissue grows in unanticipated and aggressive ways, when medical interventions lead to unexpected complications or medications raise concerns about a gradually developing risk, and when endometriosis diagnosis becomes a catch-all category that could mask the onset of a life-threatening condition.

Mental health and sleep routines: Uttarkashi, India tunnel collapse workers' experience.

Sleep Med

December 2024

Department of Psychiatry & Division of Sleep Medicine, AIIMS Rishikesh, India.

Among the mental health outcomes and disaster types (determined by damage to life, property, long-term consequences, displacement, and unpredictability), floods are associated with anxiety and sleep problems, mudslides with anxiety and mood disturbance, volcanic eruptions with acute stress reactions, and earthquakes with anxiety, depression, and physical complaints. Disasters such as tunnel collapse are unique as it involves the healthy, without loss of personal property or displacement; hence, they can have very different health-related outcomes. In this study, we explore mental health and sleep-related issues in workers rescued from an under-construction collapsed tunnel trapped for 17 days.

This study was co-designed and co-led alongside people with lived experience and a research advisory committee.

Background: Family environment plays a critical role in shaping stress response systems. Concordance between mothers' and children's physiological states, specifically their Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), reflects dyadic co-regulation. Negative or weakened RSA synchrony during interactions is linked to various psychosocial risks, but existing research has focused on risks in the mother or child as opposed to the dyad.

In the UK, many cancer services were overwhelmed as oncology staff were reassigned, and cancer diagnoses and treatments were delayed. The impact of these pressures on end-of-life care for patients with advanced cancer and their relatives is not well understood.
