Aerobic batch cultivations of Candida utilis were carried out in two micro bioreactors with a working volume of 100 muL operated in parallel. The dimensions of the micro bioreactors were similar as the wells in a 96-well microtiter plate, to preserve compatibility with the current high-throughput cultivation systems. Each micro bioreactor was equipped with an electrochemical sensor array for the online measurement of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and viable biomass concentration. Furthermore, the CO(2) production rate was obtained from the online measurement of cumulative CO(2) production during the cultivation. The online data obtained by the sensor array and the CO(2) production measurements appeared to be very reproducible for all batch cultivations performed and were highly comparable to measurement results obtained during a similar aerobic batch cultivation carried out in a conventional 4L bench-scale bioreactor. Although the sensor chip certainly needs further improvement on some points, this work clearly shows the applicability of electrochemical sensor arrays for the monitoring of parallel micro-scale fermentations, e.g. using the 96-well microtiterplate format.

The current research assessed the effectiveness of four hybrid constructed wetland (HCW) systems for the remediation of synthetic dye wastewater with Reactive Black 5 (RB5) azo dye. All HCW systems had identical configurations, consisting of a horizontal CW followed by a vertical CW, and operated under diverse conditions such as the presence of plants (Typha angustifolia), feeding modes (batch and continuous) and intermittent aeration (4 h day). Anaerobic-aerobic conditions simulated within the HCW systems were crucial in removing the pollutants from synthetic dye wastewater.

With the widespread use of typical antibiotics such as sulfamethazine (SMT), it leads to their accumulation in the environment, increasing the risk of the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has shown great potential in treating antibiotic wastewater. This study introduces a technique utilizing natural pyrrhotite powder as a nucleating agent in four sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) for the treatment of dye wastewater. Through analysis of various factors including pH, pyrrhotite surface free energy, sludge zeta potential, and shifts in microbial communities, the mechanism by which pyrrhotite facilitates the formation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is elucidated. Over 140 days of continuous operation under neutral conditions, natural pyrrhotite rapidly cultivated AGS under neutral conditions.
