Recent investigation of cortical coding and computation indicates that temporal coding is probably a more biologically plausible scheme used by neurons than the rate coding used commonly in most published work. We propose and demonstrate in this letter that spiking neural networks (SNN), consisting of spiking neurons that propagate information by the timing of spikes, are a better alternative to the coding scheme based on spike frequency (histogram) alone. The SNN model analyzes cortical neural spike trains directly without losing temporal information for generating more reliable motor command for cortically controlled prosthetics. In this letter, we compared the temporal pattern classification result from the SNN approach with results generated from firing-rate-based approaches: conventional artificial neural networks, support vector machines, and linear regression. The results show that the SNN algorithm can achieve higher classification accuracy and identify the spiking activity related to movement control earlier than the other methods. Both are desirable characteristics for fast neural information processing and reliable control command pattern recognition for neuroprosthetic applications.

Accurate segmentation of brain tumors from MRI scans is a critical task in medical image analysis, yet it remains challenging due to the complex and variable nature of tumor shapes and sizes. Traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs), while effective for local feature extraction, struggle to capture long-range dependencies crucial for 3D medical image analysis. To address these limitations, this paper presents VcaNet, a novel architecture that integrates a Vision Transformer (ViT) with a fusion channel and spatial attention module (CBAM), aimed at enhancing 3D brain tumor segmentation.

Cognitive Radio (CR) technology enables wireless devices to learn about their surrounding spectrum environment through sensing capabilities, thereby facilitating efficient spectrum utilization without interfering with the normal operation of licensed users. This study aims to enhance spectrum sensing in multi-user cooperative cognitive radio systems by leveraging a hybrid model that combines Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. A novel multi-user cooperative spectrum sensing model is developed, utilizing CNN's local feature extraction capability and LSTM's advantage in handling sequential data to optimize sensing accuracy and efficiency.

There is growing interest in using deep learning models to automate wildlife detection in aerial imaging surveys to increase efficiency, but human-generated annotations remain necessary for model training. However, even skilled observers may diverge in interpreting aerial imagery of complex environments, which may result in downstream instability of models. In this study, we present a framework for assessing annotation reliability by calculating agreement metrics for individual observers against an aggregated set of annotations generated by clustering multiple observers' observations and selecting the mode classification.

Purpose: In this review article, we present an extensive overview of recent developments in the area of dysarthric speech research. One of the key objectives of speech technology research is to improve the quality of life of its users, as evidenced by the focus of current research trends on creating inclusive conversational interfaces that cater to pathological speech, out of which dysarthric speech is an important example. Applications of speech technology research for dysarthric speech demand a clear understanding of the acoustics of dysarthric speech as well as of speech technologies, including machine learning and deep neural networks for speech processing.
