We describe an immunocompromised patient with disseminated Legionella pneumophila infection. A chronic leg ulcer was probably the port of entry for the infection. Treatment required several operations and prolonged antimicrobial treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of Legionella soft tissue infection and pneumonia treated with tigecycline.

Background: species are the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease and, as ubiquitous waterborne bacteria, are prone to antimicrobial resistance gene (ARG) acquisition and dissemination due to the antimicrobial contamination of natural environments. Given the potential health risks associated with ARGs, it is crucial to assess their presence in the population.

Methods: The ARGs and were detected in 348 samples, isolates, and DNA extracts using conventional PCR.

Plastisphere in a low-pollution mountain river: Influence of microplastics on survival of pathogenic bacteria.

Microplastics (MPs) are found even in remote and low-pollution freshwater ecosystems. However, the microbial communities associated with MPs in these environments remain poorly understood. We characterized the plastisphere in a low-pollution riverine ecosystem and evaluated the influence of different MPs in the persistence of pathogens in such environments.

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are common in both natural and engineered freshwater ecosystems. They play important roles in biofilm control and contaminant removal through the predation of bacteria and other taxa. Bacterial predation by FLA is also thought to contribute to pathogen dispersal and infectious disease transmission in freshwater environments via the egestion of viable bacteria.

Legionella lymphadenitis in immunocompetent adult: Case report.

IDCases

July 2024

Department of Infectious Disease, Faculty of Medicine, University of Balamand, Dekweneh, Beirut 1003, Lebanon.

Introduction: Extrapulmonary legionella disease is rare and occasionally reported in immunocompromised patients; it includes lymphadenitis, panniculitis, hepatitis, atrio-ventricular block, arthritis, prosthetic valve endocarditis and myocarditis. In this article, we report a rare case of legionella suppurative lymphadenitis in an immunocompetent patient.

Case: 53-year-old female patient from the Philippines, non-smoker, previously healthy who presented to our facility for chills and respiratory distress following a course of corticosteroid intake.

Given the recent global surge in Legionnaires' disease cases, the monitoring of Legionella pneumophila becomes increasingly crucial. Epidemiological cases often stem from local outbreaks rather than widespread dissemination, emphasizing the need to study the characteristics of this pathogen at a local level. This study focuses on isolates of L.
