We sought to identify a level of alcohol consumption representing the boundary between health protective and hazardous drinking. The Winnipeg Health and Drinking Survey began in 1990-91 (n = 1257). Seven years later, a third wave of interviews (n = 785) expanded questions on heavy episodic drinking (HED) and assessed the consumption of > or = 3, > or = 5, > or = 8, and > or = 12 drinks at a sitting for each of wine, beer and liquor (equivalent to about 40 g, 65 g, 105 g and 155 g of ethanol). Cox proportional hazards models were based on seven years of illness and mortality data following the Wave 3 interview, and were stratified by gender and HED definition. For HED of > or = 40 g, > or = 65 g, > or = 105 g, or > or = 155 g per occasion, the hazard ratios for morbidity and mortality from all causes were 1.06, 1.09, 1.17, and 1.16 respectively in women, and 1.00, 0.98, 1.02, and 1.02 in men. Most of these hazard ratios were significant in women, whereas none was significant in men. This study did not provide support for a definition of HED that could divide protective from hazardous alcohol consumption.

Background: Reporting on and monitoring epidemics is a public health priority. Several initiatives and platforms provide epidemiological data, such as the EM-DAT International Disaster Database, which has 1525 epidemics and their impact reported since 1900, including 892 epidemics between 2000 and 2023. However, EM-DAT has inconsistent coverage and deficiencies regarding the systematic monitoring of epidemics data due to the lack of a standardized methodology to define what will be included under an epidemic disaster.

Background: Family income to poverty ratio (PIR) may have independent effects on diet and lifestyle factors and the development of prediabetes and diabetes, as well as on mortality. It is unclear how the protective effect of a healthy lifestyle against death differs between individuals with different glucose metabolic profiles and whether PIR mediates this effect. This study aimed to explore whether healthy lifestyle and family PIR reduced the risk of all-cause mortality in participants with different metabolic status and the mediating role of PIR.

This study utilizes the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to prioritize climate change mitigation strategies for coastal regions systematically. The AHP, a robust data-driven decision-making framework, was employed to evaluate five strategies: Mangrove Restoration, Zoning and Building Codes, Seawalls, Coral Reef Protection, and Relocation Programs. The analysis revealed that Mangrove Restoration emerged as the most effective strategy, achieving the highest score of 0.

Objectives: To characterize the serum cytokine profile in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) at onset and during follow-up and assess their utility for predicting relapses and disability.
Methods: This retrospective multicentric cohort study included patients aged 16 years and older meeting MOGAD 2023 criteria, with serum samples collected at baseline (≤3 months from disease onset) and follow-up (≥6 months from the baseline), and age-matched and time to sampling-matched patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Eleven cytokines were assessed using the ELLA system.
Background: Purpose-in-life (PiL) refers to the tendency to derive purpose and meaning in life. Higher PiL was associated with lower risk for developing Alzheimer's dementia in older white participants (age 70s-80s). It is unclear, however, whether the protective effect of PiL can be observed as early as in the 50s and 60s, and whether PiL is associated with a delay in onset age of cognitive impairment.
