Published: September 2009

Independent verification of the production of element 114 in the reaction of 244-MeV ;{48}Ca with ;{242}Pu is presented. Two chains of time- and position-correlated decays have been assigned to ;{286}114 and ;{287}114. The observed decay modes, half-lives, and decay energies agree with published results. The measured cross sections at a center-of-target energy of 244 MeV for the ;{242}Pu(;{48}Ca,3-4n);{287,286}114 reactions were 1.4_{-1.2};{+3.2} pb each, which are lower than the reported values.

Behind the scenes of EQA-characteristics, capabilities, benefits and assets of external quality assessment (EQA).

Clin Chem Lab Med

January 2025

Canadian Microbiology Proficiency Testing Program (CMPT), Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

The main stakeholders in external quality assessment (EQA) programs are the participants, in whose interests these challenges are ultimately organised. EQA schemes in the medical field contribute to improving the quality of patient care by evaluating the analytical and diagnostic quality of laboratory and point-of-care tests (POCT) by independent third parties and, if necessary, pointing out erroneous measurement results and analytical or diagnostic improvement potential. Other benefits include the option of using EQA samples for other important laboratory procedures, such as the verification or validation of diagnostic medical devices (IVD-MDs), a contribution to the estimation of measurement uncertainty, a means of training and educating laboratory staff through educational EQA programmes or samples, or even for independent and documented monitoring of staff competence, such as on samples with unusual or even exceptional characteristics.

Article Synopsis
  • The review analyzed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effectiveness of topical sesame oil (SO) in preventing and managing infusion-related phlebitis (IRP), revealing inconsistent results in prior studies.
  • Eight studies, covering various patients with chemotherapy and amiodarone-induced phlebitis, showed that combining standard care with SO significantly reduced IRP symptoms compared to control treatments.
  • While the findings suggest that SO may positively impact IRP management, the quality of the evidence was moderate and highlighted the need for better study design and safety verification of sesame oil.

Background: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of peripheral vertigo, with frequent recurrence, particularly pronounced among middle-aged and elderly populations, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. This study aimed to identify predictive factors for recurrence in middle-aged and older patients with BPPV and to develop a nomogram prediction model based on these predictors.

Methods: This retrospective study included 582 participants aged ≥45 years who were selected from the electronic medical records system of the First Hospital of Changsha between March 2021 and March 2024.

Objectives: To investigate the risk factors of recurrence of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) within 1 year and establish a nomogram model for predicting the recurrence risk.

Methods: This study was conducted in two cohorts of AIS patients (≤7 days) hospitalized in Dongzhimen Hospital (modeling set) and Fangshan Hospital (validation set) from March, 2021 to March, 2022. Lasso regression analysis was used to identify the important predictive factors for AIS recurrence within 1 year, and multivariate Logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the independent factors affecting AIS recurrence.

Comparative Effectiveness of Antivirals and Monoclonal Antibodies for Treating COVID-19 Patients Infected With Omicron Variant: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis.

Influenza Other Respir Viruses

December 2024

Laboratory of Data Discovery for Health Limited (D24H), Hong Kong Science Park, new Territories, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Antiviral drugs likely remain effective against the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, while monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapies have experienced drops in neutralizing ability. This systematic review and network meta-analysis aims to estimate the comparative effectiveness of antivirals and mAb therapies for treating COVID-19 patients infected with Omicron, capturing primarily acute outcomes. We searched multiple databases from July 4 to July 19, 2022, with updates through November 4, 2022.
