Chiral smectic liquid crystals exhibit a series of phases, including ferroelectric, antiferroelectric, and ferrielectric commensurate structures as well as an incommensurate Sm-Calpha* phase. We carried out an extension of the phenomenological model recently presented by Hamaneh and Taylor based on the distorted-clock model. The salient feature of this model is that it links the appearance of phases to a spontaneous microscopic twist: i.e., an increment alpha of the azimuthal angle from layer to layer. The balance between this twist and an orientational order parameter J gives the effective phase. We introduce a second orientational order parameter I , which physical meaning comes from the macroscopic polarization; the effect of an applied electric is also studied. We derive phase diagrams and correlate them to our experimental results under field showing the sequence of phases versus temperature and electric field in some compounds.

Hypothesis: Water drop infiltration into a thin amphiphilic porous medium is influenced by wettability. Due to the reorganization of amphiphilic matter in contact with water, polar interaction changes the wettability in the bulk porous medium and at the liquid/porous substrate interface. To model out of equilibrium water transfer, we propose a thermodynamics approach derived from Onsager's principle.

Asphaltenes, as the most complex and strongly polar component among the four components of asphalt, have a significant impact on the macroscopic physicochemical properties of asphalt. Currently, the vast variety of molecular structures used to characterize asphaltenes increases the construction complexity of asphalt molecular models. To construct a more realistic asphalt molecular model and reduce the construction difficulty, this investigation obtains the molecular morphology, molecular polarity, and infrared spectrum indicators of 21 asphaltene molecules through quantum chemical calculations.

Yet, the relationship between atomic features and condensate function remains poorly understood. We studied this relationship using the polar organizing protein Z (PopZ) as a model system, revealing how its material properties and cellular function depend on its ultrastructure.

Helical structures such as right-handed double helix for DNA and left-handed α-helix for proteins in biological systems are inherently chiral. Importantly, chirality at the nanoscopic level plays a vital role in their macroscopic chiral functionalities. In order to mimic the structures and functions of natural chiral nanoarchitectures, a variety of chiral nanostructures obtained from artificial helical polymers are prepared, which can be directly observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

By illuminating the MCPS with two counter-incident plane waves of orthogonal polarization, the electromagnetic chirality gradient can be generated. The MCPS can also enhance chirality-dependent lateral optical forces of the coupled fields so that the setup can shift trapping equilibrium positions for opposite-handedness nanoparticles and make the sideways motion observable.
