Oxygen is indispensable for aerobic respiration. However, the effects of hyperoxia on the lungs are poorly defined. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of different oxygen concentrations on rat lungs. Rats (n = 6 per group) were exposed to hyperoxia for 90 minutes at 3 different concentrations: 50% (H50%), 75% (H75%), or 100% (H100%). Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed and the right lungs were removed for histological analyses. The BAL samples were assayed for lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status using biochemical methods. Hyperoxia induced influxes of macrophages (1.8- to 2.3-fold) and neutrophils (7.0- to 10.2-fold) into the lungs compared to the control group (exposed to normoxia; n = 6). Histological analyses of the hyperoxic groups showed hemorrhagic areas and septal edema. A significant increase (2.2-fold) in lipid peroxidation was observed in the H100% group compared to the control group (P <.05). Glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities were reduced to approximately 20% and 40% of the control values, respectively, in all 3 hyperoxic groups, and catalase activity was reduced in both the H75% (-0.6-fold) and H100% (-0.7-fold) groups. These results indicate a harmful effect of hyperoxia on the rat lung, with evidence of oxidant/antioxidant imbalance and histological damage.

Introduction: We assessed the prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and associated socio-occupational factors among delivery riders from a Brazilian city at two time points during the pandemic.
Methodology: Surveys for antibody and viral RNA testing were conducted from November 2020 to January 2021, and from March to May 2021 in a group of 117 delivery riders. A questionnaire on socio-occupational characteristics and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) preventive measures was completed.

Recruits are exposed to high levels of psychological and physical stress during the special forces selection period, resulting in dropout rates of up to 80%. To identify who likely drops out, we assessed a group of 249 recruits, every week of the selection program, on their self-efficacy, motivation, experienced psychological and physical stress, and recovery. Using linear regression as well as state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, we aimed to build a model that could meaningfully predict dropout while remaining interpretable.

Previous studies suggest that early-life stress (ELS) induced by early maternal separation and isolation (MS) stress during the stress hyporesponsive period (SHRP) leads to increased curiosity-like and increased risky decision-making behaviour in adolescence. Evidence suggests that dietary interventions early in adolescence could play an important role in mitigating the detrimental effects of MS stress on risky decision-making behaviour. Hence, the present study hypothesized that nutritional supplements such as saturated fat (SFA) and/or polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) would be beneficial in ameliorating the impact of MS stress on risky decision-making behaviour when incorporated into the diet during early adolescence.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different cold acclimation strategies on exercise performance in male mice exposed to low-temperature environments.
Methods: Male mice were subjected to five distinct acclimation regimens over 8 weeks: immersion at 10 °C (10 °CI) or 20 °C (20 °CI), swimming at 10 °C (10 °CS), 20 °C (20 °CS), or 34 °C (34 °CS). During the first 2 weeks, the acclimation time progressively decreased from 30 min to 3 min per day, and the water temperatures were lowered from 34 °C to the target levels, followed by 6 weeks of consistent exposure.
