Published: March 2010

This study reports on the occurrence and behaviour of six pesticides and one metabolite in a small stream draining a vineyard catchment. Base flow and flood events were monitored in order to assess the variability of pesticide concentrations according to the season and to evaluate the role of sampling frequency on the evaluation of fluxes estimates. Results showed that dissolved pesticide concentrations displayed a strong temporal and spatial variability. A large mobilisation of pesticides was observed during floods, with total dissolved pesticide fluxes per event ranging from 5.7x10(-3) g/Ha to 0.34 g/Ha. These results highlight the major role of floods in the transport of pesticides in this small stream which contributed to more than 89% of the total load of diuron during August 2007. The evaluation of pesticide loads using different sampling strategies and method calculation, showed that grab sampling largely underestimated pesticide concentrations and fluxes transiting through the stream.

Article Synopsis
  • Many pesticides used in agriculture can accumulate in the environment, exposing bees to multiple substances simultaneously, which is not commonly studied in research.
  • The study focused on the chronic effects of pesticide mixtures on honey bee worker's hemolymph, using concentrations found in their natural environment.
  • Results showed that acetamiprid decreased urea levels significantly, glyphosate had little effect, and tebuconazole, despite being considered safe, caused notable changes in several biochemical markers, indicating a need for further research on fungicides' impact on bees.

Background: Glia mediated neuroinflammation and degeneration of inhibitory GABAergic interneurons are some of the hall marks of pyrethroid neurotoxicity. Here we investigated the sex specific responses of inflammatory cytokines, microglia, astrocyte and parvalbumin positive inhibitory GABAergic interneurons to λ-cyhalothrin (LCT) exposures in rats.

Methods: Equal numbers of male and female rats were given oral corn oil, 2 mg/kg.

This study investigated the production and application of lignocellulosic wood vinegar and tar as organic pesticides to combat bacterial canker disease in trees, caused by pathogenic bacteria. Lignocellulosic wood vinegar and tar were produced from various lignocellulosic wastes through pyrolysis at different temperatures, with sawdust at 300 °C, 350 °C, and 400 °C yielding the highest quantity and quality of vinegar. Chemical analysis revealed that the lignocellulosic vinegar contained significant concentrations of acetic acid, methanol, and phenolic compounds, all known for their strong antimicrobial properties.

The sustainable material, biochar (BC) from a hardwood source, was synthesized via pyrolysis process at 400 °C (BC400) and 700 °C (BC700) and used as a modifier during the electrochemical sensor design. The prepared BCs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and elemental analysis (CHNS). The development of rapid analytical techniques for detecting pesticides employing a low-cost carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with BC is a novel strategy to provide a sensitive response to water pollution.

Electronic address:

Ethiprole is a second-generation phenylpyrazole insecticide used in agricultural production as an alternative to fipronil due to its lower toxicity to bees. Ethiprole amide is chiral metabolite of ethiprole, but information regarding its formation and degradation in vegetables is limited. Here, the absolute configuration of ethiprole amide enantiomer was determined through circular dichroism, and the behaviors of chiral ethiprole and its metabolites in five kinds of vegetables were studied through field experiments.
