A recent study of a child born with one cerebral hemisphere has revealed an extreme developmental reorganization of visual cortex. Self-organizing visual maps demonstrate a surprisingly flexible restructuring in response to cortical loss.

Vitamin A (all-trans-retinol; at-Rol) and its derivatives, known as retinoids, have been adopted by vertebrates to serve as visual chromophores and signaling molecules, particularly in the eye/retina. Few tissues rely on retinoids as heavily as the retina, and the study of genetically modified mouse models with deficiencies in specific retinoid-metabolizing proteins has allowed us to gain insight into the unique or redundant roles of these proteins in at-Rol uptake and storage, or their downstream roles in retinal development and function. These processes occur during embryogenesis and continue throughout life.

Horizontal connections in anterior inferior temporal cortex (ITC) are thought to play an important role in object recognition by integrating information across spatially separated functional columns, but their functional organization remains unclear. Using a combination of optical imaging, electrophysiological recording, and anatomical tracing, we investigated the relationship between stimulus-response maps and patterns of horizontal axon terminals in the macaque ITC. In contrast to the "like-to-like" connectivity observed in the early visual cortex, we found that horizontal axons in ITC do not preferentially connect sites with similar object selectivity.

Navigating unfamiliar environments can be challenging for visually impaired individuals due to difficulties in recognizing distant landmarks or visual cues. This work focuses on a particular form of wayfinding, specifically backtracking a previously taken path, which can be useful for blind pedestrians. We propose a hands-free indoor navigation solution using a smartphone without relying on pre-existing maps or external infrastructure.

In addition to visual inspection of such maps and models, quantitative metrics convey the reliability of the atomic coordinates, in particular how well the model is supported by the experimentally determined 3DEM map. A recently introduced metric, Q-score, was shown to correlate well with the reported resolution of the map for well-fitted models.

Aim: To compare three-dimensional (3D) facial morphology of various unilateral cleft subphenotypes at 9-years of age to normative data using a general face template and automatic landmarking. The secondary objective is to compare facial morphology of 9-year-old children with unilateral fusion to differentiation defects.
Methods: 3D facial stereophotogrammetric images of 9-year-old unilateral cleft patients were imported into 3DMedX® for processing.
