We report the efficient N-arylation of acyclic secondary amides and related nucleophiles with aryl nonaflates, triflates, and chlorides. This method allows for easy variation of the aromatic component in tertiary aryl amides. A new biaryl phosphine with P-bound 3,5-(bis)trifluoromethylphenyl groups was found to be uniquely effective for this amidation. The critical aspects of the ligand were explored through synthetic, mechanistic, and computational studies. Systematic variation of the ligand revealed the importance of (1) a methoxy group on the aromatic carbon of the "top ring" ortho to the phosphorus and (2) two highly electron-withdrawing P-bound 3,5-(bis)trifluoromethylphenyl groups. Computational studies suggest the electron-deficient nature of the ligand is important in facilitating amide binding to the LPd(II)(Ph)(X) intermediate.

Metalation of dimesitylphosphane oxide, MesP(O)H (1), with alkali metal reagents (BuLi, NaH, and A(hmds); A = K, Rb, and Cs) in THF yields the corresponding dimesitylphosphinites of lithium (2-thf), sodium (3-thf), potassium (4-thf), rubidium (5-thf), and caesium (6). Their molecular structures exhibit a broad and fascinating variety. Dinuclear compounds 2-thf, 3-thf, and 5-thf have central four-membered AO rings, whereas the potassium congener crystallises as a tetranuclear complex with an inner AO heterocubane cage.

Controlled formation of mixed-metal bimetallics was achieved two derivatised 1,10-phenanthroline ligands bearing an imino- or amino-phosphine appendage at the 5-position. Selective coordination of the phen group to the [Re(CO)Cl] core was achieved enabling precise construction of bimetallic complexes with a second rhenium centre or with gold. The mixed Ru/Au complex was similarly obtained with the imino-phosphine but access to the heterobimetallic iridium systems required prior formation of the P-bound gold complexes subsequent to the introduction of the [Ir(Ppy)] fragment.

Despite the potential of sodium sulfide (NaS) for phosphorus (P) recovery from iron-phosphate waste, the underlying mechanism regarding its impact on P conversion and product quality has not been well addressed. In this study, the effects of NaS addition on P release and recovery from a chemical-enhanced phosphorus removal (CEPR) sludge during anaerobic fermentation were systematically investigated. The results revealed that the effective mobilization of P bound to Fe (Fe-P) by NaS dominated the massive P release from the CEPR sludge, while the organic P (OP) release was not significantly enhanced during anaerobic fermentation.

Bacterial ribonuclease P (RNase P) is a tRNA processing endonuclease that occurs primarily as a ribonucleoprotein with a catalytic RNA subunit (P RNA). As one of the first ribozymes discovered, P RNA is a well-studied model system for understanding RNA catalysis and substrate recognition. Extensive structural and biochemical studies have revealed the structure of RNase P bound to precursor tRNA (ptRNA) and product tRNA.

The Finnish Archipelago Sea (AS) has long been subject to intensive anthropogenic phosphorus (P) loading. The area suffers from seasonal hypoxia and cyanobacterial blooms despite reductions in nutrient discharge from the catchment and point sources. Internal loading may even dominate the P budget.
