Clinical characteristics and removal of broken burs retained in the lower jaw.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Oral & Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, Key Laboratory of Oral Biomedicine Ministry of Education, Hubei Key Laboratory of Stomatology, School & Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China.

Background: A broken bur retained in the lower jaw is an uncommon complication that occurs during the extraction of the impacted mandibular third molar. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of the broken burs and review our experience with the removal of the broken burs in these cases.

Methods: All patients, who suffered the broken bur remained in the lower jaw due to the extraction of the impacted mandibular third molar and presented to our hospital from July 2019 to July 2024, were included in this retrospective study.

A roadmap from the bond strength to the grain-boundary energies and macro strength of metals.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Automobile Materials, Ministry of Education, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Jilin University, 130022, Changchun, China.

Correlating the bond strength with the macro strength of metals is crucial for understanding mechanical properties and designing multi-principal-element alloys (MPEAs). Motivated by the role of grain boundaries in the strength of metals, we introduce a predictive model to determine the grain-boundary energies and strength of metals from the cohesive energy and atomic radius. This scheme originates from the d-band characteristics and broken-bond spirit of tight-binding models, and demonstrates that the repulsive/attractive effects play different roles in the variation of bond strength for different metals.

Problem: Water, sanitation and waste infrastructure and services in Ukrainian health-care facilities often fail to meet global and national standards, hindering the provision of safe, quality care. The war has worsened existing problems.

Approach: To incrementally improve water, sanitation, hand hygiene, environmental cleaning and health-care waste practices, the World Health Organization (WHO) is working with the health ministry, the Ukrainian Public Health Centre and regional United States Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) to implement the Water and Sanitation for Health Facility Improvement Tool (WASH FIT).

Design and test of steam-injected continuous scrambled egg device.

Curr Res Food Sci

December 2024

Institute of Food Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences/Key Laboratory of Agricultural Product Processing, Ministry of Agriculture, Beijing, 100193, China.

To solve the existing problems of low yield, uneven quality, and single form of industrially scrambled eggs, we have developed a continuous high-output steam scrambled egg device based on the principle of steam injected. By establishing calibration curves for egg, oil, and steam flow rates, determining the key parameters of the equipment, and simulating the heat transfer process between steam and egg by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), we created the device and verified its production performance. The results show that the capacity of this device can reach 104.

Dual-function paper-based biosensor for sensitive detection of hyaluronidase and human papillomavirus DNA using diffusion wet area as readout.

Biosens Bioelectron

March 2025

Institute for Advanced Study, Research Center for Differentiation and Development of TCM Basic Theory, Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine, Nanchang, Jiangxi, 330004, China. Electronic address:

Herein, a novel dual-function paper-based biosensor using diffusion wet area as readout has been developed for simple and sensitive detection of hyaluronidase (HAase) and human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 DNA, respectively. The target-regulated-water absorption hydrogel synthesized by hyaluronic acid (HA) and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) is chosen as an ideal material for diffusion wet area generation on paper. The hydrogel can be degraded through the enzymolysis of HA by HAase or the trans-cleavage of ssDNA by HPV DNA-activated CRISPR/cas12a system.
