In recent years, social-emotional competence of preschool children has come to the fore. In spite of this, social-emotional skills have been largely neglected in health examination for school entry in comparison with cognitive skills. After a description of the concepts "emotional competence" and "social competence" the importance of social-emotional skills for school readiness and academic achievement is shown. Then we describe how these skills can be assessed in health examinations for school entry. One can differentiate between behavioural observation, interview, and questionnaires. Advantages and disadvantages of these methods are demonstrated and suitable diagnostic instruments are mentioned.

Background: The transition from primary to secondary school presents a challenging developmental milestone which often marks a decline in academic performance. Social-emotional skills are recognized as fundamental to academic success but longitudinal research is needed to determine the extent of their association over this transition period.

Aim: This study sought to determine the association between self-reported social-emotional competencies of students in their final year of primary school (Year 6; age ~11 years) and reading and numeracy performance in their first year of secondary school (Year 7; age ~12 years).

Introduction: Veterans deal with 'unobservable' medical or mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, at higher rates than the general population. Disclosure of such conditions is important to provide social, emotional, medical and mental health support, but veterans may face challenges when deciding whether to disclose conditions, including fear of stigma or discrimination. Safe disclosure in the workplace is particularly important, as it allows employees to gain accommodations and enables employers to manage workplace health and safety effectively.
