Wind turbines used to combat climate change pose a green-green dilemma when endangered and protected wildlife species are killed by collisions with rotating blades. Here, we investigated the geographic origin of bats killed by wind turbines along an east-west transect in France to determine the spatial extent of this conflict in Western Europe. We analysed stable hydrogen isotopes in the fur keratin of 60 common noctule bats (Nyctalus noctula) killed by wind turbines during summer migration in four regions of France to predict their geographic origin using models based on precipitation isoscapes.

An approach for load frequency control enhancement in two-area hydro-wind power systems using LSTM + GA-PID controller with augmented lagrangian methods.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Diagnostics of Electrical Equipment, Institute of Electrodynamics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Beresteyskiy, 56, Kyiv-57, Kyiv, 03680, Ukraine.

This paper proposes an advanced Load Frequency Control (LFC) strategy for two-area hydro-wind power systems, using a hybrid Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network combined with a Genetic Algorithm-optimized PID (GA-PID) controller. Traditional PID controllers, while extensively used, often face limitations in handling the nonlinearities and uncertainties inherent in interconnected power systems, leading to slower settling time and higher overshoot during load disturbances. The LSTM + GA-PID controller mitigates these issues by utilizing LSTM's capacity to learn from historical data by using gradient descent to forecast the future disturbances, while the GA optimizes the PID parameters in real time, ensuring dynamic adaptability and improved control precision.

Experimental data on aerosols exhaled into the environment from different wind musical instruments.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Bioaraba, New Technologies and Information Systems in Health Research Group, Vitoria- Gasteiz, Spain.

Brass bands that include wind instruments are heavily affected by rules established during the pandemic. The aim of this experimental work was to assess the aerosols emitted through different wind instruments. The Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) was used to measure the aerosols emitted and transmit those characteristics to a database.

Life cycle analysis (LCA) is a popular tool for determining the environmental impacts of a product in use. The aim of this study is to carry out a life cycle analysis, gate-to-gate, of a mass packaging process using a polyethylene shrinking film with a focus on energy consumption, raw material use and associated emissions, and film post-consumer disposal scenarios. Two different scenarios for the disposal of the shrinking film used in the packaging process were analyzed, namely recycling and landfills.

How does globally accumulated tropical cyclone energy vary in response to a changing climate?

Sci Bull (Beijing)

December 2024

Department of Ocean Science and Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen 518055, China. Electronic address:

How tropical cyclone (TC) activity varies in response to a changing climate is widely debated. The accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) is one of the indicators of TC activity and has attracted considerable attention because of its close relationship with the damages caused by TCs. Previous studies have focused on detecting long-term trends in global ACE; however, the results are inconclusive.
