Cryptococcosis is a systemic-opportunistic mycosis caused by two species of the encapsulated yeast-like organism, Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii, which cause infection in immunocompromised individuals and in immunologically normal hosts, respectively. Most susceptible to infection are patients with T-cell deficiencies. The spectrum of disease ranges from asymptomatic pulmonary lesions to disseminated infection with meningoencephalitis. After the emergence of AIDS, cryptococcal infections have become much more common. The mycosis occurs less frequently in children than in adults. The purpose of this article is to discuss the aetiology, clinical presentation, predisposing conditions and outcomes in cases of cryptococcosis in children. Emphasis is placed upon paediatric cases occuring in Brazil and in particular to highlight the difference between cases diagnosed in Porto Alegre (South - subtropical climate) and in Belem (North - equatorial climate).

Introduction: Deep mycoses acquired by penetrating trauma to the skin can have varied and sometimes atypical morphological presentations resulting in diagnostic dilemmas and delay in treatment onset. Histopathology can be a useful tool in not only diagnosing but also differentiating various deep mycoses.

We report a pediatric case of pulmonary cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans in an immunocompetent child. Although the patient presented with mild clinical symptoms, pulmonary imaging revealed severe abnormalities. The diagnosis was confirmed through fungal culture of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and detection of serum cryptococcal antigen.

Background: Cryptococcus neoformans causes cryptococcosis, primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals, including solid-organ transplant recipients, and, less frequently, immunocompetent people.
Case: A 15-year-old male with congenital hepatic fibrosis, portal hypertension, and cirrhosis underwent orthotopic liver transplantation. He received perioperative antimicrobial and antifungal prophylaxis and continued immunosuppressive treatment.
