Aim: To investigate the correlation between doublecortin and CaM kinase-like-1 (DCAMKL-1) protein expression, K-ras gene mutation, and their impact on patient prognosis in colorectal cancer (CRC).
Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of DCAMKL-1 protein in 60 cases of colorectal adenoma, 82 cases of CRC (including 65 cases of lymph node metastasis) and paraffin-embedded paracancerous intestinal mucosal tissue. K-ras gene mutations in primary CRC lesions were detected using an amplification-refractory mutation system and fluorescent polymerase chain reaction.

Multi-targets inhibitor 6-bromo-indirubin-3'-oxime (BIO) has diverse biological effects on cancer cells. The key component of the β-catenin destruction complex glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β), one of the major target for BIO, polyubiquitination and degradation of the main oncoprotein β-catenin in colorectal cancer (CRC). In the present study, we evaluated the effect of BIO on drug resistance and biological properties of CRC cells.

Aberrant Wnt signaling pathway is associated with a wide array of tumor types and plays an important role in the drug resistance of cancer stem cells (CSCs). To explore the effects and mechanism of WNT signaling pathway inhibitor XAV939 on drug resistance in colon cancer cells, the colon cancer cells SW480 and SW620 were treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)/cisplatin (DDP) alone or combined with XAV939. Cell cycle distribution, apoptosis level and the percentage of CD133+ cells were detected by flow cytometry.

Objective: To identify the expression of Doublecortin and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase-like-1-expressing cells (DCAMKL-1-expressing cells) in the colon epithelium and to analyze their deviation in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced colitis and colitis associated cancer.
Methods: A total of 60 healthy female C57 BL/6J mice were used, 40 for the DSS induced colitis model group and 20 for colitis associated cancer model group. In the former group, mice were sacrificed at day 7 after DSS administration (B group), 3 days (C group) and 7 days (D group) after DSS withdraw, separately.

Background: Colon cancer stem cells may drive carcinogenesis and account for chemotherapeutic failure. Although many markers for these cells have been proposed, there is no complete agreement regarding them, nor has their presence in the early phases of carcinogenesis been characterized in depth.
Methods: The expression of the putative markers LGR-5 (leucine-rich-repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 5), MSI-1 (Musashi-1) and DCAMKL-1 (doublecortin and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase-like-1) was studied in normal colon mucosa (NM), in the precancerous lesions Mucin Depleted Foci (MDF) and in macroscopic tumours (adenomas) of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine-treated rats.
