Zampanolide (1), a 20-membered macrolide from a Tongan marine sponge, stabilizes microtubules and blocks cells in G(2)/M of the cell cycle. Zampanolide is cytotoxic in the low nanomolar range and induces microtubule bundles in cells. It leads to tubulin assembly in cells and in purified tubulin preparations and is not a substrate for the P-glycoprotein drug efflux pump. Zampanolide, with only four stereogenic centers, may be amenable to large-scale synthetic preparation.

Spectroscopy-guided isolation of extracts of the Tongan marine sponge cf. (Lamarck, 1814) has resulted in the reisolation of the labdane diterpenoid luakuliide A () and one new congener, luakulialactam A (). In addition to establishing the absolute configuration of , synthetic modifications to the luakuliide framework at key positions has created a set of six derivatives (-) which were used to interrogate a structure-activity relationship relating to the immunomodulatory effects of luakuliide A.

Total alkalinity (TA) is an important variable of the ocean carbonate system. In coastal oceans, carbonate system dynamics are controlled by a range of processes including photosynthesis and respiration, calcification, mixing of water masses, continental inputs, temperature changes, and seasonal upwelling. Assessments of diel, seasonal and interannual variations in TA are required to understand the carbon cycle in coastal oceans.

Waterbirds are vital to coastal wetland ecosystem, and play significant roles in global biodiversity maintenance, cultural and educational services, etc. Waterbirds are particularly vulnerable to environmental change, particularly land-cover change, which has severely degraded their ecological niches. Accordingly, this study developed a waterbird-habitat preference index to quantify waterbird dependence on Xiamen Bay's habitats and a subsidiary waterbird-specific habitat suitability index to predict potential effects of future land-cover change on waterbirds.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) volcanic eruption in January 2022 generated catastrophic tsunami and contends for the largest natural explosion in more than a century. The main island, Tongatapu, suffered waves up to 17 m, and Tofua Island suffered waves up to 45 m, comfortably placing HTHH in the "megatsunami" league. We present a tsunami simulation of the Tongan Archipelago calibrated by field observations, drone, and satellite data.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), a polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) homolog, seriously threatens human health. In this study, a strain with high BDE-209 degradation activity, named TAW-CT127, was isolated from Tong'an Bay, Xiamen. Under laboratory conditions, the strain's optimal growth temperature, pH, and salinity are 45 °C, 7.
