Background: Cerebral autoregulation is a robust regulatory mechanism that stabilizes cerebral blood flow in response to reduced blood pressure, thereby preventing cerebral ischaemia. Scientists have long believed that cerebral autoregulation also stabilizes cerebral blood flow against increases in intracranial pressure, which is another component that determines cerebral perfusion pressure. However, this idea was inconsistent with the complex pathogenesis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, which includes components of chronic cerebral ischaemia due to mild increases in intracranial pressure.

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a severe condition marked by intense nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, which is different from typical morning sickness. It is marked by weight loss exceeding 5% of pre-pregnancy weight, ketonuria, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and in some cases, arrhythmias - primarily linked to electrolyte disturbances. Treatment typically involves conservative measures such as small, bland meals, medications like metoclopramide and ondansetron, and correction of electrolyte abnormalities.

A bout of leisure-time physical activity improves sleep on the subsequent night. However, whether breaking up sedentary time during the workday improves sleep is unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine whether breaking up prolonged sitting by standing during the workday leads to better sleep the following night.

Background: Long-term fasting demonstrates greater therapeutic potential and broader application prospects in extreme environments than intermittent fasting.

Method: This pilot study of 10-day complete fasting (CF), with a small sample size of 13 volunteers, aimed to investigate the time-series impacts on gut microbiome, serum metabolome, and their interrelationships with biochemical indices.

Results: The results show CF significantly affected gut microbiota diversity, composition, and interspecies interactions, characterized by an expansion of the Proteobacteria phylum (about six-fold) and a decrease in Bacteroidetes (about 50%) and Firmicutes (about 34%) populations.

Syngas Production Improvement from CO2RR Using Cu-Sn Electrodeposited Catalysts.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Departamento de Química Física Aplicada, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), C/Francisco Tomás y Valiente 7, 28049 Madrid, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores using electrodeposited copper (Cu) and tin (Sn) in electrocatalysts to efficiently reduce atmospheric CO and produce valuable products while integrating with renewable energy.
  • The research focuses on different configurations of Cu and Sn, finding that a catalyst with Sn over a thin layer of Cu performs best, demonstrating promising durability in initial tests.
  • Optimized Sn and Cu-based catalysts yield over 60% organic products, mainly CO, at low energy costs (under 3 V), highlighting the process's economic viability.
