Magnesium chloride (MgCl2)-based dust suppression products are commonly used throughout western United States on nonpaved roads for dust suppression and road stabilization by federal, state, and county transportation agencies. The environmental implications of annually applying these products throughout spring and summer months on adjacent stream chemistry are not known. Sixteen streams were monitored biweekly for 1 to 2 yr in two Colorado counties for a suite of water quality variables up and downstream of nonpaved roads treated with MgCl2-based dust suppression products. Eight of 16 streams had significantly higher downstream than upstream concentrations of chloride or magnesium over the entire monitoring period (p

Eosinophils play a crucial role as effector cells in asthma pathogenesis, with their differentiation being tightly regulated by metabolic mechanisms. While the involvement of iron in various cellular processes is well known, its specific role in eosinophil differentiation has largely remained unexplored. This study demonstrates that iron levels are increased during the differentiation process from eosinophil progenitors to mature and activated eosinophils in the context of allergic airway inflammation.

Coal mines generate significant amounts of dust during production, transportation, and stockpiling, leading to health hazards and environmental pollution. To address the inefficiencies and environmental impact of current chemical dust suppressants, a novel dust suppressant was developed utilizing cellulose derived from Napier grass (NG), modified through carboxymethylation, and supplemented with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylamide (PAM). Orthogonal experiments identified the optimal ratio of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), PAM, PVA, and octyl phenol polyoxyethylene ether (JFC-1) as 1:0.

Silibinin, a major compound of silymarin, has been reported to alleviate respiratory diseases including acute lung injury, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary fibrosis through its antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. However, the specific mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects, particularly in allergic asthma, are not fully understood. With the increasing prevalence and impact of allergic asthma, there is a need to elucidate the exact underlying mechanisms of its potential treatment effects.

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) in the air harms human health. Most studies on particulate matter's (PM) effects have primarily focused on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Recently, IL-32θ, one of the IL-32 isoforms, has been demonstrated to modulate cancer development and inflammatory responses.

Loess profiles along the Danube River provide a record of long-term Quaternary dust (loess) deposition in central-eastern Europe. Here, Sr-Nd isotopic data from four loess-palaeosol profiles (47 samples) spanning the last two-glacial-interglacial cycles are presented. The isotopic compositions generated by this study are compared with bedrock and sedimentary samples from Europe and North Africa to decipher the sources of sediment.
