THE EFFECT OF EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE ON THE COURSE OF INFECTIOUS MYXOMATOSIS OF RABBITS.

Published: June 1942

Rabbits, convalescent from vaccinia and in good general health, were subjected to infection with myxoma during a period of exposure to a high external temperature. It was observed that in proportion as the temperature was elevated, a profound change in the course of the myxoma infection occurred. At the highest temperatures, the disease was held completely in abeyance, and no lesions appeared within 17 days of observation. At lower temperatures, lesions appeared which tended to be circumscribed, and which reached their maximum development within 6 or 8 days after inoculation. Regression then set in and complete healing occurred. There was wide variation in the degree of protection which a given temperature conferred on an individual rabbit as measured by the amount of virus required to cause infection, although for single animals the difference in concentration of virus required to produce consistently positive and consistently negative results was not apparently different from that obtaining in the controls. With the data at hand, it does not appear justifiable to draw final conclusions as to the state of immunity of the animals which survived the modified infection.

Dynamic responsive structural colored materials have drawn increased consideration in a wide range of applications, such as colorimetric sensors and high-safety tags. However, the sophisticated interactions among the individual responsive parts restrict the advanced design of multimodal responsive photonic materials. Inspired by stimuli-responsive color change in chameleon skin, a simple and effective photo-crosslinking strategy is proposed to construct hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) based hydrogels with multiple responsive structured colors.

An animal's body mass is said to be indirectly related to its rate of heat loss; that is, smaller animals with higher surface area to volume tend to lose heat faster than larger animals. Thus, thermoregulation should be related to body size, however, generalizable patterns are still unclear. Domestic dogs are a diverse species of endothermic mammals, including a 44-fold difference in body size.

Light-induced electron spin qubit coherences in the purple bacteria reaction center protein.

Photosynthetic reaction center proteins (RCs) provide ideal model systems for studying quantum entanglement between multiple spins, a quantum mechanical phenomenon wherein the properties of the entangled particles become inherently correlated. Following light-generated sequential electron transfer, RCs generate spin-correlated radical pairs (SCRPs), also referred to as entangled spin qubit (radical) pairs (SQPs). Understanding and controlling coherence mechanisms in SCRP/SQPs is important for realizing practical uses of electron spin qubits in quantum sensing applications.

Van der Waals (vdWs) materials are promising candidates for hetero-integration with silicon photonics toward miniaturization and integration. VdWs materials like molybdenum telluride and black phosphorus, despite being prominent, exhibit air sensitivity, and their room temperature emissions can be significantly broadened by tens of meV. Here, a self-encapsulation strategy is developed to scalably synthesize robust 2D vdWs ErOCl with sub-meV narrow emissions at the telecom C-band.

A growing body of evidence suggests that non-optimal ambient temperatures are associated with increased incidence rate and mortality of thromboembolic diseases. We aim to investigate the association between apparent temperature (AT) and coagulation, which is a central pathological link in the formation of thrombi. In this study, we conducted a time series analysis using data from 18,894 participants collected from a health check-up center in Beijing between 2014 and 2023, and validated our findings using 20,549 participants from an andrology outpatient clinic.
