Background: Although polioviruses (PVs) replicate in lymphoid tissue of both the pharynx and ileum, research on polio vaccine-induced mucosal immunity has predominantly focused on intestinal neutralizing and binding antibody levels measured in stool.

Methods: To investigate the extent to which routine immunization with intramuscularly injected inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) may induce nasal and pharyngeal mucosal immunity, we measured PV type-specific neutralization and immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgA, and IgM levels in nasal secretions, adenoid cell supernatants, and sera collected from 12 children, aged 2-5 years, undergoing planned adenoidectomies. All participants were routinely immunized with IPV and had no known contact with live PVs.

Objective: The aim of this case report is to describe the results of complex decongestive therapy (CDT) in a patient with poliomyelitis and bilateral lymphoedema, and to emphasise the effect of CDT on wound healing.

Method: A 48-year-old female patient was given CDT for bilateral grade 3 lymphoedema in the lower extremities and a deep wound on the right foot. She had been diagnosed with poliomyelitis sequela and mobilised with a wheelchair for 26 years.

Tonsillectomy and poliomyelitis: Development of causality.

Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol

November 2022

Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York, USA; Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York, USA.

Objective: This paper serves to review the historical progression of clinical, epidemiological and immunological evidence on the relationship between tonsillectomy and poliomyelitis and its influence on clinical medicine.

Methods: A literature review was conducted using terms relating to poliomyelitis, tonsillectomy, and immunology. Primary sources published between 1900 and 2000 were reviewed, analyzed and evaluated based on their historical, clinical, epidemiological, scientific and immunological pertinence towards the relationship between tonsillectomy, and poliomyelitis during epidemics.

An increased level of proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α in tumor microenvironment regulates the bioenergetic capacity, immune evasion and survival of cancer cells. Emerging evidences suggest that mitochondrial immune signaling proteins modulates mitochondrial bioenergetic capacity, in addition to the regulation of innate immune response. The optimal oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) capacity is required for the maintenance of functional lysosomes and autophagy flux.

Intracerebral Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) infection in mice induces inflammatory demyelination in the central nervous system. Although C57BL/6 mice normally resistant to TMEV infection with viral clearance, we have previously demonstrated that RORγt-transgenic (tg) C57BL/6 mice, which have Th17-biased responses due to RORγt overexpression in T cells, became susceptible to TMEV infection with viral persistence. Here, using T-bet-tg C57BL/6 mice and Gata3-tg C57BL/6 mice, we demonstrated that overexpression of T-bet, but not Gata3, in T cells was detrimental in TMEV infection.
