The chemical and immunological properties of the p-aminophenol alpha- and beta-glucosides of glucose are described and correlated. The results are discussed with reference to their possible bearing on the chemo-immunological nature of the specific polysaccharides of bacterial origin.

Cellulose being the most abundant polysaccharide on earth, beta-glucosidases hydrolyzing cello-oligosaccharides are key enzymes to fuel glycolysis in microorganisms developing on plant material. In Streptomyces scabiei, the causative agent of common scab in root and tuber crops, a genetic compensation phenomenon safeguards the loss of the gene encoding the cello-oligosaccharide hydrolase BglC by awakening the expression of alternative beta-glucosidases. Here, we revealed that the BglC compensating enzyme BcpE2 was the GH3-family beta-glucosidase that displayed the highest reported substrate promiscuity and was able to release the glucose moiety of all tested types of plant-derived heterosides (aryl β-glucosides, monolignol glucosides, cyanogenic glucosides, anthocyanosides, and coumarin heterosides).

Human natural anti-α-galactoside (anti-Gal) and anti-β-glucoside (ABG) antibodies were previously reported to recognize the serine- and threonine-rich peptide sequences (STPS) of albumin-associated O-glycoproteins (AOP1 and AOP2) as surrogate antigens, forming anti-Gal/ABG-AOP1/AOP2-albumin triplet immune complexes in plasma. Since antibodies in these triplets still possessed unoccupied binding sites, the presence of triplets on human platelets that abound in surface O-glycoproteins was examined. Upon treatment with α-galactosides and β-glucosides, normal platelets freshly isolated from young healthy individuals released triplets identical with plasma triplets according to ELISA results.

A newly identified cellulase-producing Fusarium chlamydosporum HML278 was cultivated under solid-state fermentation of sugarcane bagasse, and two new β-glucosides enzymes (BG FH1, BG FH2) were recovered from fermentation solution by modified non-denaturing active gel electrophoresis and gel filtration chromatography. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that the molecular weight of BG FH1 and BG FH2 was 93 kDa and 52 kDa, respectively, and the enzyme activity was 5.6 U/mg and 11.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of three toxic β-glucosides, phlorizin, santonin, and amygdalin, on carbohydrate metabolism in the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), when diets mixed with β-glucosides were fed to third-instar larvae. The growth of the larvae was significantly inhibited by exposure to santonin after 96 hr but not obviously affected by phlorizin and amygdalin. The midgut trehalase activities were only 51.
